What weight oil is in a new motor from factory? I assume it is Mopar brand. Just want to pick up a quart in case I need to add. At what mileage do most of you members do your first oil change?? I'm at 1000 miles now and I'm loving this truck!! Will do my first big tow this weekend, can't wait:D

I believe the factory fill is Valvoline Premium Blue. I found it in quarts at Wal-Mart for somewhere around $1. 60 a qt. The oil jug has a little Cummins logo and states "endored and recommended by Cummins Inc. " I would not buy it from the stealer, they probably want $3. 00 a qt :rolleyes:

I couldn't get a definite answer to this question, so I changed the oil at ~750 miles. I had already chosen Delo 400 as the oil I would use, so didn't see any reason to wait. I've always changed out new oil at less than 1000 miles because I bought into the theory that it's a good idea to do first change early to remove any break-in stuff that might be present. Whatever is in there is probably 15-40 wt.

Oil ?

I know some can not wait to change to oil that came in the Eng from the factory . Stop and think how will it help to change oil early? Any ware of eng is normal and you have one of the best filters available any metal will be trapped by the filter or rest in the pan . =We know that mileage gets better after about 14_or 15 K mi do to ware in of parts factory oil is good for light or heavy service 3. 5 or 7. 5 K mi seems like a waste of good oil that not given a chance to do its job. If you change at 1K or so when will the next change take place 2or 3K and will you change a good filter out too. Every one settles on what he or she thinks is a good interval to change after having put on several thousand miles , towing heavy loads or hi speed could call for more frequent changes . Just a few thoughts ,. Ron Bissett in LOUISVILLE KY:-{}

Just go by the owners manual that came with your truck. That should get you at least 500K miles out of the CTD. Use Rotella T 15w40. You will love the smell for the first 500 miles after the oil change. Enjoy :D

I changed the oil on my '91 at about 1000 miles - that engine had a magnet attached to the drain plug, and it was liberally covered with iron fuzz, apparently flushed bits and pieces from the manufacturing process, as well as some seating in of moving parts.

Second oil change was at around 2000 miles on the oil - greatly reduced iron evident on the magnet - subsequent changes improved radically, and were performed at 3000 mile intervals.

NOW, question is, assuming that the SAME manufacturing processes and random iron particles are present in our new engines, do we REALLY wanna let them continue to circulate for the full 7500 miles or so as DC recommends - or get them the heck OUTTA there before they unnecessarily increase internal wear - oil is STILL pretty cheap - and *I* sure don't mind a couple of early changes, if I suspect it might get some trash out of the engine I'd rather not have in there for thousands of miles - and NO, *I* don't wanna trust the oil filter to take them all out - if it HAD done that, I wouldn't have seen them on the magnet... ;) :p :D
