I am getting my ol getrag rebuilt and I ask the guy what oil he recomends and he says hes not sure but he thinks I need to use a heavier oil. I have been using mobil 1 5w30 syn. I told him I heard it was because of needle bearings that could not handle the heavier oil but he didnt think that was an issue. What do you all think? Also Do I need to use a non synthetic to break it in or not?:confused:

DON'T EVEN THINK OF A HEAVIER LUBE!!!!!!!!

That is a sure way to lose a fresh transmission, at least the Getrag 360 type. The factory manual recommends 5W-30 motor oil, service classification SG or SG-CD 3. 5 quarts to be exact. If you want to up grade, alot of folks seem to use a total synthetic as long as it meets the spec's given and also I've heard over filling the transmission through the shifter hole. I personally plan on adding a couple of the power take off filters that Geeno's stocks to add more capacity and to filter the oil.

PS A Heavier oil won't make it up into the taller parts of the transmission, resulting in starved bearings. :{

I used the Mobil 1. It works great! The extra oil capacity is really not the problem. The problem isthe front mainshaft bearking gets starved for oil, because by design, the oil level was not high enough (or conversley, the bearing wasn;t located low enough in the case ;) Anyway, if you add the transmission filters from Geno's, and add the aditional oil to fill the filters to capacity, your oil level will still be too low. I believe each filter adds a quart of oil, however, an extra quart is needed to make sure the bearing gets bathed in oil. Therefore, if you add a filter, you should add 2 additional quarts of oil. The best way to do this is to remove the shifter and pour the oil right into the top of the case.

I used Pennzoil Synthetic from Autozone. The synthetic was somewhat expensive compared to conventional oil but opted for it to be safe. I thought it would help it some. It's been in there for about 10,000 miles. I checked it a few days ago and is still full and is the same color it was when I put it in there so I'm happy:D Any good 5W-30 oil should be okay.
