Up until my last change I was running Amsoil Premium API CJ-4 Synthetic 15W-40 Diesel Oil. Now I am running Amsoil 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil.

Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5/40 and Fleetguard LF16035 since it was new. Truck only has 120k kms ( about 75k miles).

I had a bad experience with too thick of oil way back in 1974, starved an engine on a cold Montana morning start-up, it was ugly.
Oil has come a long-long way since then but .... , so I tend to go with the 5-40 when in the cold country.

When I went in for my free oil change, the service writer at my dealership said they were using Mopar branded Pennzoil. So that is what is in mine now..

They have Mopar branded Pennzoil Ultra for the 6.4L Hemi. Does Pennzoil make a diesel oil (other than a marine version)?

Yes, Shell Rotella products.

Royal Dutch, which owns Shell, bought out Penzzoil and Quaker State many years ago.

But Penzoil is one brand and Shell is another and Rotella is from Shell so why would the service guy say Pennzoil? He could have said Royal Dutch or Shell Oil Products US and been correct but I do not see how Pennzoil is correct. Or does their Pennzoil group make the oil that is sold under the Shell brand?

If it has the Pennzoil name on it then it may be something only dealers have access to. Other than the Euro spec diesel oils which are primarily 30w I'm not aware of anything that's available to the public. All synthetic 40w oils I've seen have always come from the Shell side of the company.

Edit: thought you were asking about synthetic 40w, Pennzoil does make a mineral based 15w40. Basically rebranded Rotella.

My dealer has Pennzoil Ultra advertisements all over their service area. And it appears that's all that they use. There was a sign thay said they use it "exclusively". So i was assuming they were using Pennzoil branded Ultra for my free oil changes. But since i didn't see them actually put it in..... Not sure what they were using. But now that i look at my receipt..... The receipt says "Pennzoil "

Valvoline premium blue 5w40 synthetic. First time I've used Valvoline in years. Cummins approved...Probably because Cummins got a good deal.

I went from somewhat dirty 15W40 Rotella T to fresh outta the jug 5W40 Rotella T-6 in about 55 minutes this evening (along with an air filter and two fuel filters).

I talked to a local dealer earlier this afternoon. The Service Manager stated that a Mopar Brand Oil that was made by Pennzoil is what they were putting in the trucks and cars at the first service to change the break in oil.

fleetguard 9080

I am currently running Delo5w-40 with a Fleetguard 9028 . The truck is deleted so no regens.
I am amazed how clean the oil stays, after 1K miles of mostly short trips to town , the oil is very light amber.

I do have a long trip to the NE coming up so the 5-40 serves well for the cold starts.

The 9028 has the stacked disc bypass filter built-in so I am in essence running a bypass.

So what's in your sump today.

John

It does not look to me like the Fleetguard 9080 is a direct spin on for our 5.9 and 6.7L applications, as it has a different thread size. It looks like the LF9028 would fit right on.
Is this so?
how did you mount this filter? I'm happy to be wrong if it does really fit, please let us know.

thanks

I use NAPA 15W40 oil and NAPA filters. The oil is made by Ashland, same company that makes Valvoline. NAPA Gold filters are made by Wix. Don't use the Silver line, they are terrible, we don't even carry them. I work at a local NAPA store. I have a question though. Since I do all my own oil and filter changes does the computer keep track of oil change intervals? Or do I need to document elsewhere to maintain my warranty? I figured the computer would as it keeps track of everything else. If this has been answered elsewhere I apologize.

I know that it's cheaper to do all of your own work, but with the way companies like to screw people out of doing warranty work, or warranty repairs. I would say If you are using the right oil and filter (Chrysler/FCA/Mopar approved) you should be all right as long as you keep receipts. I would take my truck to a local garage (which I did in the past) and ask them to do the service with the parts I supplied, that way you get a proper receipt as to mileage intervals. JMHO
