I hope this the right forum to ask this,I'm a newbie, I was thinking about swithing from dealer conventional motor oil to a synthetic. Chrsler service departments say synthetic is not approved for the 600 engine, Is amaoil all that its advertising says it is and will this void my warrenty? tks silverram

Check with another dealer, the dealer I use in Warren, PA agreed to put synthetic in the truck if I bring it in..... Amsoil seems to be the most popular on this board though. I don't think the warranty would be voided based on product used, FTC would have a fit about that, as long as you follow the recommendations in the owners manual for miles between changes.

It's a free country, capitalism is a great thing, and for a dealer to state that your warranty is void for using a superior product just doesn't make sense. (Besides, what do they make on an oil change? 20 bucks?)

One note though, my delaer charges 47. 95 for an oil change regardless of whether they provide the fluids or not :)

Quoting page 327 from the 2004 RAM Owner's Manual, "Note: The same oil change interval is to be followed for synthetic oil as for petroleum based oil. Also, synthetic oil must meet the same performance speficications as petroleum oil. "

Sometimes, when reading something like this, I wonder if the service departments are stupid, misinformed or if they just think we are:( .

Ponderingly,

edit:

If you did a search on "oil" here, you would be up all night, there have been a great many posts on that subject and you will not come away with a clear, single answer. Go for what you want as long as you get the right spec and change according to the maintenance schedule.

Whatever you choose, be sure it meets the CI-4 specification. Choose to ignore the CI-4 spec, and you take your engine warranty in your own hands.
