What other applications is the 5.9 used in?

I was wondering what all other applications the 5. 9 has/is used in? I know there is a plethora in the Marine field, but what about heavy duty trucks, Industrial use such as generators, pump engines, ect. I've been told that the 5. 9's were used in some of the larger F-series fords in the 1980's, but I haven't seen any facts. I'm having a little :-{} with a guy who says the Cummins isn't used in any other applications then for the Dodge pickup, and so therefore the Duramax and PSD are better... I know this is wrong and I want to get all the material together I can to prove it :-laf

We have some 10056's (with the Four banger) and they are excellent machines.



I've seen some skidders (logging rigs) with the 5. 9 and they hold up well.

Add Agco and Case International tractors to the list. Also in on older Case crawlers, not sure about current. The ISB-02 is a current option in Monaco motor homes and Ford F-650 trucks.

I'm not 100% sure but I think some of the smaller Freightliner Business Class (FL50/60) cab/chassis use them. I have not seen one in person but while delivering beef to the hospital (patients) I have seen some of the big Freightliner ambulances and I swear it sounds like they have a 5. 9 under the hood.



FWIW, the newer Fed-Ex trucks in my area sound like they have a 5. 9 in them also and I think they are made by Freightliner.

I maintain 11-12 telephone buildings that use 5. 9 litre B-series engines for our backup power generation,and they are very strong mostly trouble free engines. Tell him to stick that in his pipe and smoke it. We even have some 8. x litre(I don't remember the exact size)engines for some of our larger buildings.



I would say they are a widely used engine,mostly due to them being so reliable,and plentiful. Good luck convincing him,some people are think-headed.

Log chipper. It was a big one, the guys working it did not know much about it. They just said the feed the logs and branches in this side and they come out that side The chipper was a the parents house taking down a might maple.

I helped with the rebuild on a couple 12v's that were in Case and Kioti Loaders.

Several differant tree harvesters made here in Wisconsin use the 5. 9 CTD. Timbco, Prentice, more...

Their also used in Case's Patriot/Apache (whatever they are) line of sprayers. Their floaters use the 8. 3. I've seen them used in re-power situtations for JD tractors and Gleaner combines. Gleaner and Case use the 8. 3 in their combines. Not sure if Case uses the 5. 9 in the smaller ones tho. Case industrial equipment (backhoes, bobcats, and such) use the 5. 9 and 3. 9. I have seen one in a Freightliner ambulance.



The 5. 9 was orginally developed between Case and Cummins and built by a comapny called Consolidated Diesel (I believe was the name) for use in Case's AG equipment.

I Drive School Bus, and our entire fleet of 200 plus buses use them. The one I drive is a 2000 84 passenger model 24V 5. 9L. LOTS of POWER!

There is a Ford F-650 running around Connecticut with a 5. 9 Common Rail, and Stacks Moose

I rented a vibratory roller last year with a 5. 9. Heston, an ag company, makes a windrower with the 5. 9, air cooled too! I have not seen this air cooled setup.

The Case K series backhoes used the 5. 9 and we had a 4 cubic yard loader that had the 8. 3 in it. I have seen a lot of Onan gen-sets on military bases, and these vary from the 4 cyl ISB all the way up to the V-12. Those V-12's have two Holset 55 or 60 turbos on them and are loud as hell when they are running.

hate to bust your bubble billy,but the international dt 466 and the t444e{7. 3} occupy the #1 and#2 spot in sales of medium duty truck engines,which one is 1 and which is 2 i cant remember,my guess is the 7. 3,because of all the school buses that run them and the ford f series line. that being said,the 5. 9 is used in more agri and construction applications,which is what the engine was originally designed for. other than perkins and john deere there is no other engine on the market, other than the cummins,that is available for the manufactors to place in various equipment apps. the 7. 3/6. 0 is a automotive diesel,the dt466 and the 5. 9 were both industrial engines that with some redesigning were both turned into automotive engines also... .

JCB uses the 5. 9 in the Ag tractor called Fasttrack. Hesston in the forage cutters Windrowers. Case IH in ag tractors and power units used on pumping and generation. Timberjack log skidders. Ford and Freightliner 650 and up trucks (Ford dos not offer the Powerstroke in the 650 the Cummins 5. 9 is the base offered diesel).

There are numerous other applications both ag and industrial.
