the 5. 9 is used in more agri and construction applications, which is what the engine was originally designed for. other than perkins and john deere there is no other engine on the market, other than the cummins, that is available for the manufactors to place in various equipment apps. the 7. 3/6. 0 is a automotive diesel, the dt466 and the 5. 9 were both industrial engines that with some redesigning were both turned into automotive engines also... .

Not quite true. The 5. 9 was origanally a joint venture between Cummins and Consolidated diesel. That was a part of Tennico that was the parent company of Case. Althogh the 5. 9 was origanally produced for industrial and Ag use it has fit very nicely into automotive use both light and medium duty.

The IH DT 466 was designed to be used in 3 application. Agricultural,IH tractors and harvesters, Industrial, crawlers, loaders and scrapers, in Automotive, IH built trucks. The 400 series IH engine has had 5 different CI displacements. 407 ci, 414 ci, 436 ci, 466 and 530 ci. The original 400 series was introduced in 1971 for all 3 applications and continues on today.

I'm having a little :-{} with a guy who says the Cummins isn't used in any other applications then for the Dodge pickup, and so therefore the Duramax and PSD are better...

Wait a minute, find me one application outside of Ford or GM where they use the duramax or 6. 0  I don't see how he's even got an argument here.

One more thing for the record, somebody mentioned Hesston. Hesston is now owned by Agco which I mentioned earlier. They also own Massy Ferguson, Challenger (Catapillar's Ag division), and White so you can pad your list a little with those if you like ;)

I did a little looking around, although I couldn't find a spec sheet on the VT365 everything I read about it was great. Seems nobody has a bad opinoin of that engine in that application. Makes me wonder how Ford managed to drop the ball

A natural gas fuelled, spark ignited version of the 5. 9L is used in the oil and gas industry for compressor drive applications.

Thats the point I've been trying to get across to him. I find it wierd that Ford spent money on getting the 6. 0 into their lighty duty F-series, but does not use them in the more work intensive 650 and 750 series, Where the Cummins or a Cat engine is used instead.

Does anyone know if the Duramax or 6. 0 (VT365 I guess as its refered to) is used in any marine applications?

Ford still uses the 7. 3 as an option in the F650, I guess they dont have much confidence in the 6. 0 in heavy aplications.

Engine options from Ford site:

Cummins ISB 205 hp engine with choice of 6 or 7-speed manual

Cummins ISB 225 hp engine with choice of 5-speed automatic or 6,7-speed manual

Power Stroke 7. 3L DI 210 hp turbo engine with choice of 5 or 6-speed manual

Caterpillar 190 hp engine with choice of 6 or 7-speed manual

Caterpillar 210 hp engine with choice of 4 or 5-speed automatic, or 5,6 or 7-speed manual

Ottowa spotter trucks use the 5. 9 turbo, intercooled

Komatsu/Kalmar 7,000-10,000lb capacity forklifts use the 5. 9, natural aspiration

Didn't Ford do make some "improvements" after IH engineered the 6. 0 for them?

We had 2 drill rigs on a work site installing monitoring wells. One was a 5. 9B non-turbo, and the other rig had a 4BT turbo. Both engines were ran at just above idle, otherwise they made too much torque and would shear off 9 inch diameter hollow-stem augers. Other rigs I have worked with have had gas 300 cubic inch I-6 Ford industrial engines. They have to be run pretty hard to do what a Cummins does at idle. :)

An Agchem Rowgator sprayer and a Willmar Ranger sprayer at my dad's work both got 5. 9s in them. They work excellent.

You can only get the F-450 and F-550 with the powerstroke. You have to move up to the F-650 to get the other diesel options.

Can you still buy a new F450-550 with a Cummins?

You can only get the 6. 0 in the F250-F350, the F450-F550 get the old 7. 3 powerstroke, in the F650 you can choose the 7. 3 powerstroke, the ISB 5. 9 Cummins, or a Caterpillar, in the F750 you can choose from the ISB 5. 9 Cummins or the Caterpillar, the Cat is the only option in the highest GVW rated F750. The Cummins and Cat engines are available in several different HP ratings.
