I have just ordered the snap-on timing kit and it should be in this week. I was thinking of setting my timing at 16 or 16. 5 what would you recommend. I do not want to lose fuel mileage or the head gasket. I am mostly stock the fuel plate is out and I have an after market turbo. I may put 370 injectors in later this spring, but I can change the timing then. So what recommendations are there for timing my truck. Also do I have to have the barring tool to turn the motor for timing or can I use something else.

Thank you, Darin

i would at least grind a 0 out of your plate for a safe feeling with your pump, and i would do 15*, thats a safe side guess. we just got done doing one with a plate and maybe joe schafer could chime in and give a report on his findings with it.

matt

Darin, if you have the stock injectors in there I would go no higher than 15. I had mine at 15. 25 but after putting stock injectors back in it feels too advanced.

When you put 370s in then go to 16-16. 5. I suggest leaving it at stock until you put injectors in unless you're bored and want something to do ;)

Another thing, use the timing charts here, not the ones that come with the kit: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/timing.htm

Mine is set at 15. 7 . Acceleration is a little more sluggish up to about 1700 rpm, but towing at 1900 or above is excellent. EGTs went down but I saw no real change in mileage.

I wish I could have got someone to do it YEARS ago. Matt set mine at 15. 283 approximate :-laf , up from 9. 5  yes that is correct using the timing pin for TDC it was at 9. 5

I run stock injectors and a #6 plate and truck runs the best it ever has, pulls hard all the way to 2300 or so (new 3gsks also  ) Mialage is up, not sure how far yet but it is noticable and it runs better in the cold mornings.

I am verey happy with it. :)

Thanks again Matt

i like to see happy people with thier trucks :) , joe, im glad everything has held up good and still runs great. have you been able to record fuel milage off a tank yet without playing with those gov springs? i would love to hear how your milage changed. i will be setting mine at 15* this week with a 100 plate and a set of 3k's. maybe a touch higher as i am putting in a set of 215's this week also.

jschafer,

I have a TST#6 in my 95 5spd. I was going to put in a 3kgsk but TST said they did not recommend it. I see you have this combination and are happy with it.

Do you know why TST does not recommend this combo?

Rog

that plate will work just fine with gov springs, i had some on my #5 and it worked awsome. i will probably be putting the 5 in my 98 that is getting a stick this week. but take joes advise, smart guy and very nice to talk with.

matt

Glad you got it done

JSchafer, glad to hear you got the timing set, I'm still buried with work and haven't had a break in months. Sorry I couldn't find time to do the timing for you. .

Your truck should pull way past 2300 with the 3GSK installed, or is that only how far you pushed it?

Sounds like you are real happy with it now.

I am going to try 15. 0 I need to do something to get my egt's down, 1500+ in fifth gear when I am going down the track or through the gears. Plus I am thinking of a 4k gov kit when I go down the quarter mile It shuts down at 89mph about 100 or so feet from the finish. dang 4. 10's.

hey, do you michigan guys have a club around there? There is none around cleveland area for me. If you have any show or meets I would love to know. I usually try to get up to coldwater area the first of the month for a snowmoblie auction so I would be in the area.

Thanks , darin

Matt, thanks for the good words, Back to a stick?

Rog, I don't know why TST says that, my truck has always had issue's and it know runs GREAT :)

Darin, we don't have a club, just some of us have met at my shop, we had fun though, Maybe someone should set it up.

No mileage report yet but have to go to New York next week will be a good test then.

Joe

its true, i have been through so much crap with it lately that i dont know what to do with it. but it is much easier on the eyes now i have done some work to it to make it nicer. i just dont have time to mess with the auto anymore, going back to work soon and gotta have a truck. im a true shifter at heart anyways.

did you ever get your timing done?

matt

Nope, can't find time. Work 9 to 6, watch my daughter from the time i get home until i leave for work in the morning. The weekends i have more important projects that need attention. My house and my family are taking up all my time. No biggie..... I'll get it done one of these days. hopefully!!!!!!
