Where are the CTD'S????

Tire hitting front suspension

Hi all,

Just got my new SPA gauges installed yesterday. Now I need to know what the acceptable range for these various temperatures is:

Engine Oil temp:

Manual transmission temp:

Rear diff temp:

Yeah, I know... why would I check a manual transmission... . well, why not? I got the newer Fastcoolers that are pre-tapped for a probe, and I wanted the rear diff gauge, and SPA offers them as a combo together, so... ..... I got one :)

Thanks,

Tom

Rough estimate

I can give you a rough estimate. This is what we get on Class eight tractors. Haven't ever had the gauges to check my Dodge.

Engine oil temp should run anywhere from the same as water temp to as high as 225'. Had a old Cummins 270 that would run 250', but had 550000 miles on it and used a gallon of oil a day.

transmission temp will vary according to load, but ranges from 160' to 220' with 230-250' in the danger zone.

Diff temp will be about the same as the transmission temp.

Thanks CF, that gives me a good feeling after getting the gauges installed. With the hot weather here in the Sacramento area now, I wanted to know when to hit the panic button. Glad to know I am way under the red zone with the temps :)

I just made a quick trip to LasVegas NV. from the Salt Lake area (roy) on I-15, and the outside temps ranged form 95F. to 112 F near LasVegas. I noticed on my gauge the Engine oil temp never went above 200 F. The transmission gauge (automatic) never went above 140 F. (TCC locked) And the rear diff never went above 200 F. I did however only have a 2200 lb. load in the back of the truck. My speed was 80 MPH most of the way. I do run synthetics, and they will run cooler than a petrolium product.

CF, I have Amsoil everywhere - Series 3000 5W-30 in the 6 speed, 75W-90 in both diffs and 15W-40 HDD&M in the engine (ATF in transfer case). The temps here in the Sacramento area have been in the mid 90's since I had the gauges installed last Sunday. I have a 20 mile each way trip from home-work-home, uphill on the way home.

So far, I have seen a high of ~150*F in the transmission, ~200*F engine oil and in the low 140*'sF in the rear diff. Since I had never monitored any of these in any vehicle, I just wanted a decent baseline to compare with.

Thanks again,

Tom

With ambient 90-100F

Load of 9k-12k

Engine 200-220F Delvac 15W-40

NV-5600 (one Fastcooler) tops out at 180F, Texaco MTX

Rear Diff 190F (MagHytec) Mobile 1 75W-90

The tranmission takes several hours to get to max temp.

Verlyn Fast has gauges on everything, you might want to email him and see what his temps are.
