Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) What size socket?

I have a jake brake and have read in the past that you can carbon up your air senser , (cant member what you call it IAT ???) any way I think I found the critter and it appears one would need a deep well socket metric to remove it for the cleaning?



also point me in the direction of this critter so I know for sure? is it behind the fuel filter towards the firewall ?

Unless you have an EGR system or something what you are talking about couldn't be an issue. There should be no soot in your intake.

I think it is a 13/16 deep???

I suppose it is actually metric, but I do not remember. Your description of its location seems accurate. It "carbons" up from valve overlap and use of exhaust brake. Marco moved his to the air horn with some success.

22mm or 13/16" they will carbon up and need cleaning had to clean mine with brake cleaner , get better MPG of about 2 to 3 mpg , Last plug on block driver side next to fuel lines by fire wall . Ron in Louisville Ky LOLOo.

Well I learned something new today. My VW had a similar problem but it has EGR (for now).

Different size

So, Whitmore, what size did you come up with? I decided after reading this to clean my IAT. Tried everything I had including 13/16" deep socket, and up to 1-1/16th socket for sending units, nothing worked. I tried a 1-1/8th open end wrench and it was a little too small, too long too work with in that space too. So I'm going to bed with a dirty IAT tonight, will try again later. bg

they were right 13/16 works great... ... sounds like to me you were on the MAP senser if that is the case go toward the firewall about 6 more inches, the IAT has 1 wire comming from it and is recessed toward the block to where you cannot use a open end on it, by the way mine was almost plugged, carb cleaner worked great... ... ... ... ..... Awrite, I found it. It looked very clean to me> Cleaned it anyway, checked the output and at 80deg. F it was 9. 09K ohms, the inst. says at 81 deg. F it should be 6. 87K ohms, wonder if I need to change it out? bg

Has anyone experienced a dirty IAT who does NOT have an exhaust brake? I am looking for solutions to the low mileage I get. I got good mileage for the first time after my lift pump failed and was replaced (went from 15 to 17 in city and from 17 to 20mpg on highway), but only lasted 2 or 3000 miles and is back to the way it was before.



Any ideas?

Cleaning the IAT might not be enough...

Seems that everyone thinks that simply cleaning it will do the trick.



Well that's not!



The output of my IAT was way off but looked clean.

I've had to change it.



To diagnose a IAT problem you have to check it's output at different temps. Only that will tell you if your IAT is ok or not.

Thanks Marco, I was hoping you would see that. My mileage has gone down in the last two years with no apparent cause, will change the IAT out and see what happens. Thanks again, bg

How do you get a dealer to check the IAT under warranty. I have had nothing but arguments in the past when trying to get poor milage fixed by a dealer. I gave up trying. One dealer topped off the tank, drove it for 10 miles - yes, 10 miles, then filled it up again and calculated that It got better than 20 mpg, then charged me about $2. 00 per gallon for the fuel (it was around $1. 10 at the truck stops).

You can do the proceedure if you are able to get your knees on the radiator and a hand on the firewall, not to bad and say 15 minutes, or you can get someone in your area to help you , post a thread requesting assistence if you are not comfie with this, there are alot of good dudes in Texas that will offer a hand... ... .....
