I would like to know about what temp. the engine is running if the gauge reads about the width of the needle past the 2`nd mark? Ido know that a cool running engine will have several long term problems. ex:faster cylinder wear, sludge build-up moisture in the oil. Any one ever shoot the engine with a electronic temp gun? What is the factory temp on the thermostat? 96`3500 5-sp thanx

goatherder,
Question 1. Not sure but if gauge and sensor(sending unit) are working I would say under 150 F.
Question 2. Thermostat on Diesels start to open at 181 F and are fully open at 203 F.

Thermostat should be easy to check out. Take it out put it in a pan of hot water. Meat thermometer(gauge and probe) would be great to use to know exact temp of water. See if thermostat is opening at correct temps.

You can also check sending unit(temp sensor) for resistance. Low readings = 155ohms(+or- 3)= high temp readings. High readig = 80. 9 ohms(=or- 4) = low temp readings.

illflem had a good on idea how to check thermostat on water temp thread. Saves some time.

Answer to revised question. Right above second line should be about 150 to 160.

Does the temp remain in that temp range all year?
During cold weather this could be normal. I have read post where that is normal operating range for other members trucks all year. Mine usually at 180-185 range unless it is in bounce mode.
