In the past month or so I have noticed if I park out side and it rains or we have a heavy dew that when I go to leave my rear brakes seem to grab really hard the first couple of times I use them. :( It is kind of aggravating since my driveway is very steep and they lock up going down it. :mad: Once I use them going down the drive they work just fine. :confused: So what do you guys think it can be is it a seal or something leaking or is it just rust forming on the rear drums from the moister. Please help me on this one I'm very confused. :{

Thanks

sounds like the brake shoes are glazed. my 94 did the same thing until i replaced them at 110k. are yours the original shoes? if they are and are still good you can un-glaze them with emery cloth.

I think it's moisture. The first time I apply brakes in the morning, the rear ones squeak and then they don't do it anymore. I'm not having to apply them hard because it's flat where I live and I ease down the street warming up the engine. Since I'm not applying them hard I don't notice a grab.

There are lots of members using these on their trucks with very good results. Barry in Granbury, Tx has lots of them, I believe. I got mine from him as have many others.

My 95 2500 (the one I traded yesterday) did the exact same thing. I've always had problems with leaky rear axle seals, which would gunk up the brake shoes. I think the the added moisture would make the brake shoes tacky till they warmed up from use, usually within about 2 miles from home. Might want to check those seals.

I have spent several months in the Tacoma area and have experienced the brake grab the first one or two applications after truck sets for 8-12 hrs. Also in the OK - cen-south TX areas. It is moisture related as it does not happen in the rockies and sw desert.

My observations, 50k on truck

Same experience here.

Mine does the same thing and has done it since I got the truck new. I have always assumed it was moisture, because it only happens to me after the truck sits a while and it has been raining.

Same here since new,but fine after the first time, I don't think its anything to worry about. Does it after I wash it allso.

Same here. No big deal.

Just be aware of it, so you can make your first stop an easy one. It goes away after the first stop or two. My chevy truck did the same thing. Theres no progressiveness, its either all on or all off till the moisture gets out of the way.

Thanks again

Appritiate all the suggestions, going to take the drums off this weekend and check for the glazzing and leaking axle seals but I would say it's most likely the moisture thing since the brakes seem to only grab when I park the truck out side or leave it sit out at night while at work.

Thanks again, got to love all this good information. :D Oo. Oo. Oo.

I have trouble with the idea that it is moisture; I live on the southern Oregon coast. It rains here! Over 19 inches since Jan 1, and I have never had a brake grab on my '01 ETH DEE 4X4.

Merryman, you have disc brakes also which typicly do not have the grab problem. Poorly Adjusted rear brakes exajurate(sp?lol) the grab problem also. So check for leaks. . adjust them while your in there and Happy Stopping :D

One of the causes of brake grab is foreign material on the linings/shoes. I know it is not the time of year for it but I would suggest that you pull the drums and inspect. If the hub or slaves are a bit of dust on them that have probably leaked. Replace/reseal as needed.

A dust mask and air hose works good for getting things clean with a final brake clean spray.

Make sure that you and spray brake clean liberally before putting the drums back on.

Make sure that the shoes are wearing the same from one end of the shoe to the other. I had failed to keep the rears adjusted and wore out a set of shoes in 30K miles. The were thin on one end.

Not quite. Vaughn has a 2001 not a 2001. 5... the disc brakes were not added until the 2001. 5 model.
