What the heck is it?

On the drivers side of my hood in front next to the hood latch, I have found a doohickey that looks like the south bound end of a north bound mechanical pencil. It has a wire that connects into the wiring harness behind the underhood lamp. I’ve looked in my truck owner’s manual and see nothing that resembles it.

Sooo what is it?

That little thingy is the temperature sending unit for your overhead console thermometer. Aint technology sumpin'?

I wondered the same thing myself, that is correct, its the temp sensor for the overhead console

Heres the part I don't get... Why is it mounted under the hood?... ... ... Is that why I get high readings sometime? Seems like it should be mounted elsewhere..... Just curious... .....

I think they mount them there so they will be protected from the outside elements, (ice, etc. ) but will still read incoming air temperature while going down the road.



I have noticed mine doesn't always read correctly until it's driven a few miles, especially if the truck has been setting in the sun.

ETH, I was thinking the same thing the other day, by another sender and somehow mount it in the intake pipe, or find the range that the sensor works in and get one with threads on it. That way you could have a switch to check the outside temp or intake temp.



I think when your sitting still engine heat drifts up to the sensor and raises the temp some.



Bought one of those for someone one time, it was only $11. But the dipstick for the cummins is $30!!! That was backwords from what I thought it would be
