There is another issue similar to this, it is that the bolts that hold the the front cover to the engine block can/do loosen over time, and make their way into the geartrain, which can have equally damaging results, the jig method of pinning the dowell pin solves the KDP but not the bolt issue. There have been two recent posts by people who have suffered the consequences of this happening. When I went to the local cummins shop to buy parts the mechanic I spoke with said they usually open up the cover and check those bolts only when they are getting oil weaping out between the case and the block, but he has seen many cases of these bolts loosening up... .
