Ok after reading many threads in this forum I keep seeing a reference to the KDP. I have no Idea what this is and would like to be educated!

anyone want to tell me what it is?

thanks,

John

There is another issue similar to this, it is that the bolts that hold the the front cover to the engine block can/do loosen over time, and make their way into the geartrain, which can have equally damaging results, the jig method of pinning the dowell pin solves the KDP but not the bolt issue. There have been two recent posts by people who have suffered the consequences of this happening. When I went to the local cummins shop to buy parts the mechanic I spoke with said they usually open up the cover and check those bolts only when they are getting oil weaping out between the case and the block, but he has seen many cases of these bolts loosening up... .

OK... I'm a new member, about 4 months. Posting - requesting information on the internet is new to me. I've got a '92 Club cab with 160K. She runs great. I'm the 4th owner (per Carfax). What do I need to check, or should I say, How do I check and see if the dowel pin needs repair or has been repaired? The truck runs great. I get about 22 mpg on the open road, about 18 towing the 3 horse trailer. I can't afford a break down, so I need info... please! Thank you. Dobrien

Welcome to TDR land Dobrien!

Click on the links posted above to learn more about what, where, and how. As far as checking to see if the repair has been done you could remove the rad fan and the fan pulley mount to see if the tell tale countersunk screw is going through the side of the gear case. Or better yet, order a KDP tab kit from TST and pull the gear case cover to see if it has been tabbed already. It would also be perscipacious to remove the gear case mounting bolts, clean the threads, and install them after applying loctite. Install the kdp tab and the new crankshaft seal that comes with TST's kit and you're good to go! No more worryin' about it!!!

Welcome to the TDR Dobrien

If you go to the top of the page and click on "user controll panel" button you can set up a signature and list al you truck spec's there. It will show everytime you post. You might also want to put the state you live in also. That way someone close to you might jump in and help if you want to pull the cover and check the KDP and cover bolts.
