Cummins M11 Plus

1st long tow with the upgrades

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whether or not we need SCA is most likely determined by the engine design. The Cummins B engine has liners that are not replacable I think. This makes them immune to cavitation but also a throw away engine. With Fords PSD and other heavy duty diesels, they have replacable press in liners on purpose, it reduces rebuild costs. I have a '01 Mack, it looks to have dexcool style coolant (orange/red color) I will have to check and see if this engine requires SCA. I know I have to watch it in my PSD and N14 Cummins (a real truck engine, Don't tell the Dodge boys!)

SHOW'S YOU HOW SMART THEY ARE. . OR ARE NOT!!!

The B series is a throw away engine? #ad

Only an idiot would put a sleeve in a B engine. No the B is not susceptible to cavitation erosion being as the cylinders are cast within the block and with a nice degree of thickness to them at that.
The PSD is also a parent bore design with NO removable liners, yet I would venture to say that the cylinder wall thickness(or thin-ness) #ad
has something to do with it's erosion.
Where did you find this drivel?

BTW: when did the 444/PSD become a heavy duty engine anyway?

The PSD is a light duty diesel the Cummins is a medium duty diesel. I haven't heard if what GM is rating the Duramax for - maybe ultralight? Yes you can throw away your Cummins you just have to wait 2 million miles to do it! On the other hand you might want to rebuild it or buy a Cummins Re-con.

As far as cavition goes when you change the coolant in a PSD you have to add an additive to prevent cavitation. NAPA and Ford both sell the additive.

The B series engine is a parent bore engine. However, there are sleeves used for an overhaul if needed. Check your service manual. There is a special tool to install the sleeves. Still no problem with coolant cavitation since these are dry sleeves installed in rebored cylinders. The requirement to be classed as a medium duty engine is that the engine be designed so that it is rebuildable and be rated for a 36K lb or more load. The competition do not meet this requirement thus the lower ratings. From what I have read regarding coolant cavitation it is the result of block design that leaves out some reinforcement ribs to save weight.

This will get the Phord/Powerstroke supporters every time: Ask them why the Cummins ISB and Catepillar engines are offered as options in the F-750 (30,000 - 33,000 lbs GVW) trucks, BUT YOU CANNOT GET THE T444(Powerstroke) AT ALL!!!! You can spec this out on Ford's website, just in case some Phord guy doesn't believe you.

Yep, that "throw away" Cummins B engine must be a piece of crap. What is the average mileage before a rebuild? 400,000 miles? 500,000 miles? Yep, garbage. I don't think that the T444 has replaceable liners, although they should have them with 200,000 mile rebuild intervals!

Funny thing too about the one comment regarding the N14, CUMMINS MAKES THAT ENGINE TOO! Sheesh, some people.....

I'd like to remind the users of our topic policy... While what you think and say on your own time is not my business, references to women's products isn't considered in good taste.

Since this board is gone in a couple days, I'm not deleting or locking anything...

Just FYI...

The T-444 can be ordered from INTL for use in applications up to 66K. It is available on their website. PSD's routinely go past 200K miles. My old 96 has right at 300K. It still runs like a top needing only minor maintanance and small parts along the way. Glow plug relays and idler pulleys are bought about once every year. The Cummins is a brute, but the PSD is not far from that mark... . CJ

I know that the newer PSD are some different than the old 6. 9's and 7. 3's, but they do share a common block AFAIK. I visited with a long time friend who is a Ford guy yesterday. His 83 ford 6. 9 did not make 200K, and he also has a 84-85ish ford F 350 that did not make it 200K either. The 350 was burning gallons of oil, so he just put in a rebuilt 6. 9 with after market turbo. His wife has a 1995?? (it has the PSD) that is reaching 200K and going strong. I don't see why the newer PSD's will go longer than the old 6. 9's if in fact the block and most of the design is essentially the same. What other than heads, injection system and turbo did the PSD's get over the 7. 3's. One thing I have to say about him, is that all of his rolling stock burns Number 2. He has an older VW Jetta (had to rebuild that too), and a bunch of diesel powered farm equipment. Some of the equipment is powered by 5. 9 Cummins, yea!!!!

The light/medium/heavy duty rating is done by the manufacturer and is distance or time to overhaul. The B series engine I believe was originally rated as light duty with a 200K to overhaul. That was later changed to 400K which put it in the medium heavy duty class. Cummins is reporting 1,000,000 miles in some RV delivery operations. Navistar and Duramax are both rated light duty at this time (funny considering Chevy calls it Heavy Duty) with an estimate of 200K to overhaul. Joesoot is right on the Navistar cavitation in that it has to do with the cylinder wall thickness. That sudden flex on compression causes cavitation outside the cylinder wall. That's why additive is strongly recommended. I'm sure Duramax will follow suit.

Power Wagon, Is the General Diesel Topics completely disappearing? This is where the men are men (and the women are proud of it).

International Truck & Engine (Navistar) also has the DT-466E, avail. in all their medium duty trucks. That's the engine the 5. 9 should be compared to.
DENNY... ... .....

Cummins Kid, your Mack is the new E-tech? If so and should be, it has press in liners with only a small portion exposed to coolant, which is by far the best design I've ever seen. Yes you do need the additive in that puppy. I don't care what anybody says, the PSD is not a very good design, as is any V8 Diesel (except for maybe a Detriot -71 or -92) and anyone who disagrees is just CACKLING! LOL.
The DT466E or Detriot series40 (same) use the same electronics as the PSD (you'll even find a FoMoCo ECM wired to it) but is a real deal OK Schoolbus engine and should be compared to the Cummins C8. 3 or ISC. Our KILLER B is in a class all it's own as the ultimate light truck engine.

The DT466E is a joke!!! lol I have one in my work truck. Rated at a puny 210HP its can barely move the 35K truck its in. Its hardly reliable. In fact the truck purcaser/head truck guy for the company I work for(Interstate Batteries) Actualy redesigned and built a fitting so the **** things would quit leaking HIGH PRESSURE oil from the injector pump. Now IH uses that fitting. I will give it one thing though, It has no wait to start light, no glowplugs or gridheaters(I don't think) and it will fire right up no matter what the temp is, plugged in or not. We only have 3 trucks at this operation and one of them(usualy a 2000 model) is in the shop. I had a check engine light come on in mine and I got a big "I dunno" from IH about why it was derating itself. It crapped on me again today so this post was a good place to vent lol I feel better. One of my dealers told me the other day(As he heard me beating the mule to get up his driveway) that my truck needed nothing less than an 8. 3 Cummins lol my kinda guy.
