cruise control gone nuts

It was just a simple 200 mile trip today. Running up I-55 and came upon slow traffic and punched the button to turn off the cruise control and it never slowed. Looked down at it, lights still on and hit it again and it still didn't release. Hit the brakes 3 times and it released but light still on. finally started hitting all the buttons on cruise control. I hit the resume button and it shoves me back in a quick acelleration and then shuts off. What the ..... is going on. If my wife had been driving I don't know what would have happened. Any ideas??

Clock spring has never been touched nor wheel ever off though I have been trying to find a new leather wheel for my 97 that doesn't have a hole worn though like mine. I thought about the clock spring but decided the light wouldn't be on if that was it. I was wondering if there is a poor or dirty conection somewhere? spiderwebs and dust on a circuit board? Wild gang of gremlins under the hood? dirty cirtcuit board idea was brought about when I hit the resume button and it accelerates real hard and then shut off. Act like a combine that I had that was recalled. They said that model killed several farmers because dust got on the circuit boards and then the hydraulics did what they damn well pleased. Tried cruise momentarily later and seemed to work fine.
