I'm all set to pick up some new tires for my 2K 4x4, and I was looking for a little more aggresive tread. Saw the new Yokohama Geolander A/T-II+, but the only problem is they are on 4-6 week backorder. These were the 285/75x16 variety. Need something before the 2nd week of April.
Since I need tires, and don't want to wait, what tires have you all used, and your feedback on them good or bad.
Mainly want the A/T for the best of both. My original Michelin LTX A/S tires were okay, but not sure I'd buy them again.

Don't know how much this will help, but, I just traded in a 2000 Chevy 2500 2wd (not the H. D. version) and I had the "Cooper Discovery Radial" tire on my truck, they were 285/75/R16's very aggresive tread EDIT> The tires were quiet also.

, and if I remember right the Load Range was "E" the REAR tires lasted about 10K miles. the FRONT ones still looked spankin' new at trade-in. (Lead foot, 300HP and and the love of burning rubber caused a 10K tire life)

The tires tread didn't completely touch the ground because the rim was to skinny. Only the center 4"-5" of tire touched the ground. I had to air down to 19PSI in the front and 17PSI in the rear to get them to touch completely.

(I ran about 40PSI daily, and 60PSI towing)

Merrick N. Cummings Jr.

P. S. My rear O. E. (Firestone Steeltex)tires lasted about 3K miles. (lead foot) (In town only)

Here's a pic of my old truck, (Hope this works).

Fred, I recently got a set of the Dunlop Radial Rover RV in 285/75-16 for a friends 96 2500 cummins truck. He was a TOYO man before, but he loves the Dunlops. They're a fairly agressive tread and they would work great on the factory 8" wheels. They are a "D" rated tire. Look up www.tirerack.com. I've had great service from them and they UPS to your door. Good Luck, Jay

Dunlop Radial Rover A/T's. 255/85. They are about 33. 5 inches tall. Handle very well in all conditions (mud/snow/rain). Only had them about 3k miles so can't say anything about wear yet. A little "softer" cornering ability compared to my OEM Michelin 245/75's. Expected since they have a much taller sidewall. More aggresive tread than you might think. Try and see the A/T's in person not in a picture. Very good in rain and have a 60,000 mile warranty.

I didn't think the Dunlop Radial Rover RV's came in a 285/75. On Dunlop's website the tallest metric tire they come in is a 255/85. These are the same height as a 285/75 only a little narrower. Are you sure they are the RV's.

Dave
My dad has a set of Rover AT's on his Chevy 2500 gasser 4x4. He has about 25,000 on them and they are wearing quite well. I don't think there is any way they will make it to 60k. He is impressed with them, and after driving the truck on a few snowmobiling trips with him, I'd have to say they hold the road quite well in the snow too. Persoanlly I opt for something a little more agressive as we do get some serious snow around here occassionally, and I like to play in the dirt (my Dad doesn't).

I had the RV's on a Blazer a few years back and really liked them. I'm considering another set for the CTD for winter use on the stock 6. 5 wheels.

I don't think a guy could go wrong with the BFG all-terrain for replacing the oem Michelins. They are a bit pricey and just normal driving and a little off-roading I have heard very little complaints.

cscpusher:

I have the "B. F. Goodrich Radial All-
Terrain Tires" 285/75R/16 tires on my
96' Dodge and have had very good luck
with them. This is the second set I have
had on the truck. I generally get about
35 to 40,000 miles with them and do not
have the "wander or pull" other members
have described.

JNutter,

What tire size are you running with the 3. 54 rear? I'm split between 265 or 285. Didn't I hear on the intercom for the Sandia Showdown that you won the Divorce Derby? I missed running into you there.

I am running 255/85 BFG MT's. Same set on a second truck and they have held up nicely. I should rotate them more than I do. It is to much tread for my current use but was great. They will soon (Fall) be replaced with 295/75 ATko's. I have heard nothing but good things about the New AT's except the price.

I've got the BFG AT's (285/75's) - they are quiet (which I personally don't care about), will go about 50k miles (nice treadwear), good on the highway, but not-so-good in mud, good in the sand (one reason why they always win the Baja). They are expensive, but if you calculate $/mile, they're very little, if any, more than other tires due to the long wear. I'm personally looking at M/T's for my next set (May/June).

If you're not going off-road alot, especially in mud, you will like these tires. If you want a tire good in the mud, get a mud tire.

My main concern with any tire is how long will they last. I know you need to rotate them like every 3,000 miles to get good wear. My Michelin's have 30,000 and have some tread left, but not enough. (At least that's what Bill Kondolay said when he saw them)
The Yokohama's have a very aggresive tread for an A/T, and the price is reasonable.
The BFG's are just way too much, almost twice the price of some of the tires out there. If they are going to last more than 35,000 miles, why bother. I like the idea of the Dunlop Rover A/T with its 60,000 mile warranty, even though I know it won't last that long, especially the way I drive.
My driving in Arizona will eat a tire quick, and the Pathfinder A/T is very popular here.
I don't go off-road with my Cummins that much, that's what the Rock Buggy is for. But I have had to haul my trailer in to rescue broken trucks out in the desert before.
Where I am moving to at the end of April is mostly dirt roads, and that's why I want a more aggressive tread. Mud tires are not necessary here.
Kat Diesel, where did you get the BridgeStones at? Are they fairly aggressive? What about price?

Cooker,
Yes, they are the Radial Rover RV. I think that this size is fairly new but the Tire Rack had them in stock when we ordered last month or so.

CSCPusher,
Try www.tirerack.com on any of the tires suggested. They have Dunlop, Michelin, B. F. Goodrich, Bridgestone etc. Just put in the size you're looking for and it will print up all available and where they are located. They do have a warehouse in Reno so it should be quick delivery although I usually receive even the back east orders within a week. I'll be in Phoenix within the next month and if possible would like a ride in your truck to check out the DTT components. I'll contact you before I come down.

I know, I have a 2wd, but I will tell you about my Coopers anyway.

Cooper SRM'II. Bought at 40K, now have 80K on truck and the coopers will last the 60K tread wear warrantee for sure! When there bad, another set of SRM'II will go on!

When you find a good thing, stick with it.

there M/S ratted, but not the tire you would use of your were into Off Roading. But I don't go off the road except for my stone driveway.

Just replaced my 245/75 OEM Michelins A/S (all season) and had over 55K on them. I wanted a little more height and a little more agressive tread and I chose to go with the 235/85 Michelin M/S. I was told by several people that the M/S should get 20 to 25 percent more milage than the A/S So far I am very pleased with the ride, feel and look of the M/S

I have the Bridgestone AT 285's. I currently have over 40K on them and still going strong. The tires are very quiet, and run true. I'll buy them again. Many tires do not run true, they are actually eliptical in shape. Bridgestone and Michelin are the only companies that make a true round tire.

I'll chime in here about Goodyear. You want agressive?I just installed a set of Wrangler MT/R in the 285/75-16. Very nice and very agressive. Road noise is not bad either. I chose these over the Geolanders due to backorder and the soft rubber(fast wear) the Yokos are known for.

I have found that BFG A/T ko's are about the best for this part of the country. Tough 3 ply side walls w/ bead protector, tread is tough and does not grate off like cheese when rock climbing. I have not found a better sand tire that is also quiet on the high way & towing. I have been using the BFG-AT's since the first month I was transfered out to the kitty litter ( 12 yrs ) and got stuck 10 ft off the hard top ( 4X4 with Coopers, they worked well back east in the mud but could not cut it in the sand.

Not all A/T's are good in all geographical areas. My BFG's are not real good in black gumbo but good in adobie.
