2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission What Tires Fit?

What is the largest offroad tire and least noisy that will fit my stock height 98. 5 ,4x4,3500 Without the use of spacers or clearance problems on the front end? If I have to use spacers on the rear that would be fine if I knew where to get some. I heard on another post about (traxxus or nittos Tires are aggressive but not noisy.

I need to start looking Now since I'll have to start saving up for them$$

I get a slight rub in the inner fender (plastic) sometimes on my 2500 with 305/70/16 mud terrain T/A's. They run pretty quiet though. John

im pretty sure 285/75's will fit no problem. that will be my next size but i have a level kit

Without Rubbing these are the tire sizes that fit:

285's = stock height

305's = 2. 5" SJ spring or leveling kit

315's = 4. 5" SJ lift

I put 315's under my truck and they only rub at full lock on the lower control arm. I am also running stock rims so there pretty inset. I used to run 295 BFG's and they didn't rub at all.



I run goodyear mtr's and there not to noisy and they wear really well and are really good offroad. I have them on my toyota rockcrawler also.

I'm running 315 Pro Comp Mud Terrains on Centerlines - stock height - slight rub on flex on inner fender. Leveling kit on the 'soon list'... ... ... ... ... .

wbraico if u go to the off road forum you will find all the tire answeres. i also have a dually and i am currantly running 255 s that are 33. 4 in tall. most 285s are same height but wider i do know for a fact i u just level the front that u can run 315s or 35s but you are going to run into spacer problems in rear between dualls. and i checked and spacers are around 350 dollars and u have to run ford outer wheels,unless u find a 35 1050 16 like maxis and the ssrs... .

I'm running 255/85's now with no rubbing. About 1/2" between the rear duals. I do have '02 rims with about 3/8" more backspacing than the original '96 rims. Spacers for the rear can be purchased at performancewheel.com located somewhere around Denver for about 200 a pair. I'll be adding some spacers when the current Truxxus 255's wear out so I can go to 35/10. 50/16's.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the 285 the largest tire that will fit under the truck as a spare or does the 3500 LWB have a larger space? I put a used (50%) 285 BFG under mine and it barely fit. I guess if you don't mind having a spare that's shorter that the rest than it doesn't matter. Gotta be hard on the diffs though isn't it?

If you have open diffs there is no 'hardship' on them, but with either a locker (Detroit) or limited slip (Tru Trac, Power Lok, etc) YES, odd sized spares will be a bad thing.

If you have the limited slip diff, it only takes one short trip on odd sized tires to do damage. The spare just seems to be a commonly overlooked piece of the puzzle when it comes to putting oversized tires on these trucks. I saw a guy a few weeks ago at Big-O putting 315's on his 2500 and with no intention of changing the 245 spare under the truck. That's just plain stupid.

You can always swap a front to the rear and run the smaller spare up front. Most people have an open front. Save the $200 and pay for it with sweat when you get a flat...
