Paul, make sure it doesn't still have the original factory filters installed!! If the truck has a pyro and boost gauges you can be somewhat assured that the previous owner cared for the truck. I wouldn't worry about the Banks, consider it a plus. Some dealer service depts will give you the service record of the truck if you give them the vin#. Many service writers are on a power trip and won't do this,Parkway in Roseburg will though. I wouldn't try it over the phone though. Other than that look for the same things you would in any used rig, steers and stops straight,no signs of a hidden major accident or obvious leaks. Go on a long test drive though various terrain, stops& starts & speeds, don't just hop on the interstate and cruise. Park it for a bit when you return and look for leaks again.

I think documented records would be nice to have if I were in the market for a used truck. I got a price I was happu with on a trade in,98 to an 01. I had oil changes, tire rotations, fuel stops, etc. logged in a book. I feel like it really helped me. The salesman also said that would help in the resale.

See if you can find a 98 12V. These have the upgraded brakes & interior, plus the venerable 12V engine. If you are wanting a 24V, see if you can find a 2000 at a good price. The 98. 5-99 24V trucks had sub-par injection pump reliability.

Make sure you do a title search. See if it's changed hands alot, or ever been titled back to DC.

Also, if Nowell is listed on there, you'll know it's due for new rear tires. #ad

Hi folks! New member here. Have saved my pennies and am about to start looking at used rams. I'm a bit mechanically challenged so any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Specifically; I have seen some used rams equipped with the Banks system. However, I was told that the Banks system was hard on auto trannies and to only get one if matched to a 5 spd. That true??Also it seems that problem areas on the ram include the paint, pwr seats, pwr doorlocks and brakes ( pre 97). Any other areas of concern??In short; if you were going to inspect a used Cummins Ram, what would you look for?? and what signs of trouble should I be aware of?? Thanks!!
