What transmission - - -

That would be a New Process four speed. It would do if you limited the throttle to idle on the Cummins. If you are thinking of using it behind a Cummins, the greater problem will be the fact that you have no OD on the New process. Consequently, very slow. I can say for sure that a Muncie will run behind a Cummins but for the same reason is not desireable, too slow without OD. I ran a five speed New process behind a Cummins and it failed in the bearings. Use a Getrag at the minimum or an NV 4500.

The NP435/445 are a new process 4 speed. Cast iron case and fairly beefy. They would proably hold up fairly well but would need high gears. I am not sure they would even bolt up to the same bell housing as a Getrag and the there is the clutch problem.

NP205 is the lightweight aluminum t-case. Worthless for anything but a six cylinder gasser. Used to eat them up with the hopped up 440's all the time.

They even have a hard time behind a wimp GM 350.

In other words thats a great gasser setup but tin foil for a Cummins project.

The NP 205 is the transfer case in my pickup, it is the heavy duty. I think that you might be thinking about the NP 208, i had that transfer case in a 84 chev with 350(and it was a wimp) but never had any problems. That transfer case should work good for a conversion but i'd look for a 5 speed transmission instead, you can get a NV 4500 kit for about 3K

205's are cast iron. Good pieces. However this one will probably have the smaller input shaft, like the first gen autos. The 4spd/205 combo would almost be bullet proof behind any gasser. You might have troubles behind an 800 hp big block when hooked to the sled, but anything else should be good. I can't imagine running around with a 4spd in my diesel. You need to look at the ratios too. I bet, but not for certain, the 435 gear ratios will be spread pretty far. Ya need to let them gassers wind to get them to work, but the diesel will be wound out, then lugged.

Darn!!! :( Need to clean my glasses. thought that 5 was an 8. I stand corrected. The 208 was an aluminum joke. Getting ready for the third one in my suburban. Stick a 4x4 deep enough and pour the power to it and they had a tendency to break the case when the chain sucked it together. Would break tail housing off behind a hopped up gas motor also.

The 435 had a deep 1st gear, a decent 2nd gear, a big jump to 3rd gear, and a small jump to 4th. With enough torque the shift points weren't too bad but you only had 3 effective gears with anything less than a 2. 75 gear ratio.

The 445 had a better split and closer ratios but were not as common. You lost the deep first gear but with a gasser and 4. 11 it worked quite well.

I have broke a few output shafts in the 435 with big blocks so they are not as beefy as they could be. With a stock motor and and overdrive unit it would be a doable project.

I've had both a 435 and a 445 (still have it) in my 71 D100. It has a stock 2bbl 318 and 2. 76 gears in the 8 3/4. I like the 445 because it has a higher first (which is synchro'd) and close gear splits. With this set-up it's a good putt around or raod truck. I've never worked it, so I don't know if it's any good with any kind of load. When I put this trans in, I researched and found the gear ratios for both. The 435 are 1st:6. 68 2nd:3. 34 3rd:1. 66 4th:1. 0, and the 445 are 1st:4. 56 2nd:2. 28 3rd:1. 31 4th:1. 0. Maybe this will help or be interesting to someone. Just as a side note, this truck hauls the mail on the freeway :-laf .

I think we're missing the question. I think Loco 1 intends to put that transfer case behind a Getrag and needs to know if he can use the adapted that came with the NP435 or if he needs a different one.

I would expect the t-case to be the same, but someone noted above about different input shaft sizes. ???

If the NP435 adapter won't work, why can't you use the adapter already on your Getrag?

Does that NP435 have PTO windows on both sides?

Yes, Michael was right. The input shaft would have to be upgraded. Thats why there is an auto and getrag version 205. I would call a drivetrain shop say Quad4x4 and get their take on the input shafts. I think way back when loco said his 205 took a dump. The question for the drivetrain shop would be if one could take the input shaft and or whatever associated parts from the diesel 205 and swap into the gasser 205, basically make one good one out of two right. . As far as the 435, wipe your *** with that one if you want it for your Cummins.

Before you wipe anything with that transmission, I would make room for it at my house. :D For that matter the t-case too. I'd like to have another 435 and a 205 for my 75. I'm sure the 203 will be fine, but a 205 would be great.

I am unsure about the adapter. Its one of those, stick them together to find out deals. At least for me anyways. Since I read the first post again, I would say that the t-case won't work behind the getrag as it sits now. Like Bill said, after a top shaft swap, that would work. Dunno about the adapter though.

Michael

I don't think Bill likes NP 4 speeds.

The diesel auto t-case had a 23 spline input shaft, manuals had a 29 spline. The tcase can be machined to take a 29 spline shaft and bigger bearing. As a guess the gasser setup probably had a 23 spline input shaft. Since I got rid of all those pieces I can't go out to the shop and check that anymore. :{
