I think it's just a matter of personal choice. I love my 6-Speed as much as others folks do their 5-speeds and Autos. Doesn't really matter as long as YOU are happy with your choice. Whatever you choose, you will LOVE the truck!

Good Luck and go for what YOU want.

Get the Auto... . but when you buy it. . tell the dealership to take the transmission out and keep it. Call Bill K and order a real transmission... .

Even though it isn't feasible. . for the dealer to keep the transmission... . it's my honest opinion. After I got a TC and VB from Bill... . I don't need no stink'n manual transmission (LMAO). I also had Bill install his Smart Controller and a Pacbrake... . Boy do I love my truck!!!!! I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Thanks DTT.....

Thanks for all the replys!!!

Wow... . Lots of info... Sounds Like the Stick has the more votes. Im still wondering about gears will look more into it... 2400 RPM at 70MPH thats high and for the amount of towing Im going to be doing. . I need freeway speed! We shall see...

Thanks again to everyone... Keep on bombing!

I too will need to make a decision in near future. I am leaning to the 6speed with 3:55's. but am considering the auto with 4:10's. I tow 2 times a month about 5,000lbs. Either will do the job easily. I have an auto gasser currently and am looking forward to the day I can make the change. Seems to be alot of 2001 on dealer lots and maybe can get a good deal now:rolleyes:

After driving a 5 speed all day yesterday, put about 150 miles one it, I would rule out getting a 5 speed for my personal use. The gap between 3rd and 4th gear was too noticable. I really did like the way it would idle up hills and what not in 2nd gear, and also how ya let out the clutch and ya just go... with no throttle. I also liked the 4 wheel disc brakes, they felt a lil bit better, but I downshifted more then anything.

I really liked my auto after getting back in it after driving the 5 speed all day. I still intend to grab a 6 speed and drive it for a day.

I had my truck in for the transfer case leaking again, and it looks like this time they fixed it? I didn't wanna drive a crappy rental car so I went to my salesman and said I was interested in trading again, might go quadcab and get the 4 wheel disc was my reasoning. So he gave me a 5 speed for the day jsut said bring it back before we close.

I really am happy with my auto, yesterday just made me believe it even more.

It really comes down to personal preference.

BK Says "With the 6 speed, the 4. 10 vs the 3. 56 isnt a real issue. The Ls they offer with the 4. 10 is a nice reason to get the 4. 10. "

Limited slip is available with 3. 54 gears. My dealer initially told me it wasn't because the order sheet says so, but the 4. 10 qualifier is only applicable with the V8 gasser motor.

Sounds like Todd T has ETH/DEE envy. :D

Think the 6 speed issues are worked out. Also do a search for 5th gear nut issues. Don't have to go back as far in the archives to find them.

What I ment by "with the 6 speed the rear gears arent a real issue"... . is that getting around town and starting off the line with the load... the 6 speed offers such a nice selection of gearing. I know top end there is a difference and I know the GCVW is different... but drive-ability with a load, I don't notice it with the 6 speed.

Also if you plan on larger tires, the 4. 10s are a must... . which is one thing I regret with my 3. 56's...

My buddy with his ETH/DEE (4. 10) towing his 10Klb 5thwheel, Vs my 6Klb TT with Auto (3. 56) , get almost the same fuel economy when towing up state... . 10. 5 - 11 mpg

Learn something every day, when my buddy spec his truck to be built and back when I was looking for mine I couldnt find a scratch of literature that offered the LS with the 3. 56's.

I agree with the 5spd 5th gear nut issue. . Still hear about it.

But thats it.

The one large problem they had with the 6 spds was in the beginning and the shipment of trannys stopped till the problem was fixed. After that, I havent read about another complaint.

And that had to do with the smoothness of shifting. My buddies 6spd was after that whole rig-a-ma-roll. . it's soo much more smoother than I expected. Tigh gating and smooth between all, easy in and easy out.

While I'll be spending money with DTT for my Auto... except if you really want an auto, I don't see a reason to buy the truck with an auto, spend a bunch of extra money to bomb it to the level of an ETH/DEE and all the money to modify the transmission, killing your warranty, when you can just buy it off the lot that way... .

I myself have ETH/DEE envy. . I wish I had that option when I bought mine.....

Oh well.....

What a life... . we have such great choices... what a thing to be worried about... we have it great. I visit some hell hole countries, it's a great reminder.

GCVW

Dose anyone know the GCVW and or Max trailer Weight for the 2500 4x4 QC 6 Speed and both gears ratios? I know its a lot to ask :D

I love this place!

OFD...

This is straight off the window sticker that was on my truck... max trailer wt 13,250 lbs. GCVWR 20,000 lbs. 6 spd w/ 4:10's.

I have a 98. 5 24V with auto trans. BD exhaust, brake, converter and K&N filter. No big deal. I would not own a shift trans. I pull a 16000lb Kountry Star, and a 5X8 Well Cargo behind it. I also have a Gear Venders with 4. 10 Dana 80 behind. Never a problem. I have never encountered a hill that put me below second and GV. I have been up 7percent grades , 5-6 miles long in WV on I64; no problem. I do not run in OD period when pulling the 5th wheel. With the GV and in third, and at 60 mph gives me 2250 rpms, right in the sweet spot. I get 11-13mpg towing and 17-22 unloaded (at 75mph).

If you get your kicks shifting all the time, go for a standard. With the auto and GV I rarely ever have to touch the gear shift. It has to be one big hill to have to go down to 2nd. [aftere experienceing the Gear Venders, I don't think I would want to own a truck without one. If you tow a lot, you don't need to do much upgrading of the engine. QUOTE]Originally posted by OFD547

I have a 99' with auto and am going to buy a new rig next year. I am contempating getting a manual six speed but am wondering if I will need it. I will only be hauling a fithwheel 4 to 5 times a year. How dose the exhaust barkes work on the autos vs. manual? what is the failure rates on the two types? Mine has 65,000 with no probs for now... Any info from everyone outhtere who has driven/towed with both.

Thanks

Chris
