by reading my sig, which turbo out there would best suite my needs? i occasionally tow my boat(8000lbs) so tow-ability is a must. down the road i'll probally add a BDD downloader. i gotta change the stock turbo due to way high temps when towing! how do you guys like the super phat shaft 65?... . james :D

I'm guessing the phat shaft 62 would make a better tow turbo than the phat shaft 66. I'm still learning about this stuff myself but most of what I read says the 62mm compressors are less surge prone than the 66mm wheels, but I think the exhaust housing plays into the equation also. Hopefully some guys with more education than I will chime in.

RE: Phat Shaft Turbos

These turbos are a very good addition to your truck and you would be VERY pleased with your purchase. Phat Shaft 62 is good for up to 550hp and would be a very good choice for a truck to pull trailers etc. Our Super Phat Shaft 66 is a high horse power low exhaust temp. drop in replacement. Both are great. Call us or private message us to learn more. Thanks

I don't see how you could get 550 hp out of a 62mm compressor with out drugs but it would be a great charger for towing.

I'm in the same situation as well, but I need fass first. I am looking at the sps66 since I only tow 6-8K. Hey tobaccogrower how do you like those edm injectors?

injectors

with the stock turbo they get real hot real quick(towing). they make nice power. it's smooth unlike alot of boxes. i've yet to dyno the truck with the injectors and ez. soon come!... james

Oh, I get it. The Phat Shaft 62 will allow you to make 550hp, you just won't be able to stay in it more than 15 seconds at a time, right? :p :-laf

I ran a 62mm B1 for a while and a turbo that size will allow you to tow max vehicle weight somewhere around 425hp fairly comfortably (not having to stare at the EGT gauge). Towing with more HP is always possible though depending on your weight. The go pedal won't be matted to the floor all the time with an 8K boat in tow.

Lag is subjective, but towing with a 66mm turbo like the SP66 or SPS66 is just no fun. It doesn't bother some people though. Also, there are reports of ever-so-slight surging with the SPS66 while towing heavy loads at low RPMs. Also consider the BDDL is not adjustable on the fly, so it would be nice to have a turbo big enough to set it and forget it and be able to handle anything your BDDL/Injector combo would ever throw at it. A 66mm turbo will do that for you no doubt if you can find one you like and tows well.

My vote for your setup would probably be a Killer B2 with 64mm compressor and 14cm exhaust.

This is good advice if you're looking for a comprimise between spoolup and power making ability. I ran one for a year, dynoed over 500 hp and towed up to 27k gross. Great turbo. Works well as a secondary as well :D

RE: Super Phat Shaft 66

Saying that the Super Phat Shaft 66 turbo is not a good turbo to pull with is not quite accurate. There have been some trucks that have seen a slight comp. surge at 1600-1700rpm but only under light load and in overdrive. So driving faster or shifting out of overdrive works well. The up side of using this turbo to tow with is the very low drive pressure allows or helps EGT's to be very low. The extra hp. helps in keeping your road speed up with plenty of power in reserve. I towed a 28' 10' wide, twin engine cabin cruiser at half throttle up a very steep and long mountain. We have pulled at 75 mph in Brady's truck and 85 mph in my truck up Parleys Canyon on I-80 and didn't drop road speed. This was done at half throttle and both trucks had plenty of hp in reserve to pass if needed. The highest the EGT's got was 1325 deg. THe pyrometer usually was 1000-1250 deg. The last grade to the top is the hardest which is when the 1325 deg. was only bumped. The Phat Shaft 62 is a very stable turbo with no issues or possible issues. It works well in towing and normal driving. // We have been testing 64mm comp wheels and have found comp. surging under full load at higher RPM's (Full load RPM's) Thats why we have not offered those products. (64mm turbos) The hp. is also less than 66mm turbo. Hope this helps. Thanks
