My '03 owners manual says to use 15W40 for all temps 0 degrees F and up. It does not specify Dino or Synthetic.

It also states that I can use 5W-40 synthetic for all temps cold to hot.

I would like to run Amsoil, but they don't make a 5W-40 synthetic.

I am thinking that it would be O. K. to run the 15W-40 synthetic even though it isn't specified in the manual as synthetic.

The way I read that chart is that DC says if you want to use an oil with a viscosity spread that wide (5-40), to only use a synthetic oil (and NOT dino), but you have the choice of dino or syn for the 15W-40 oil.

I use Amsoil AME 15W-40 Heavy Duty Marine.

in my '97 I ran 15w-50 mobil 1 full synthetic, up until I sold it at 315,000. In another 5k, I'll probably run the same in my '03.

Kamenick, I'm sure the Mobil 1 15W50 did well in your '97, but I believe it's not rated for diesels and an even better choice from Mobil for your '03, which is designed for diesels, is their Delvac 1 5W40, which is pretty much the ultimate viscosity too (15W50 is a little on the heavy side).

One thing for sure, you'll find a lot of opinionated people on TDR when it comes to oil

Have fun and glad you joined up here :)

Spooled-up,

AMsoil just introduced a 5W-40 (AFL). It was designed for European automakers, and is a FULL PAO based synthetic.

Actually Mobil1 is rated for diesels, says so right on the label. Mercedes diesels come with it as their factory fill. That being said, it does not have the heavy duty rating the Cummins calls for. You are right, Delvac1 is most likely the better choice. I rather doubt you would have problems with the Mobil1, though... . JMHO
