Competition How many trucks are running in the 12's?

Competition TBM racing

I receive endless abuse from a smack talking buddy of mine who has a late 80s 1 ton Chevy crew cab dually powered by a 454 with tri-Y headers, chip and K&N running through a 3 speed auto with 4. 11s.

Will my 2500 with 3. 55, DD2s, AFE and EZ running through a 6 speed stick stand a chance straight up or I should I introduce something else in to the mix (no, not NOS or propane, more like towing a trailer) to even it more my way?

Any hints on starting (stock clutch) or how far/fast to take it to?

I know it's not quarter mile or pulling stuff but DAMNIT he hurts my feeling when he talks about my "Lamb" pickup and makes sheep noises.

TIA

A Chevy 350 will spank a 454!!LMAO!

He has a big ol fuel pig.

You have enough to get him right now at highway speeds. Light to light his auto a 4:10s should get you. he is gearbound thow.

I would avoid short racing , you may get over ambitious and smoke that stock clutch.

Ease into at 50-60, you'll walk right past, on a steep hill better yet. By all means tow trailers, then he will really be looking for a rock to hide under. :D

Bearing in mind I have a new Con OFE in a box in my garage waiting UNTIL I smoke my stock clutch - what is a good way to take off from a standing start?

I read the "slip it in 3rd until 25mph" method but I'd like to drive home under my own fumes.

I had a 94 454 which I believe had more horses than the late eighty's 454's. Now it was strickly stock and had a 5 speed manual. My 24 valve in stock condition with 355's over 20 mph would flat walk away from it, there is just no comparison, especially towing. The same trailer I am towing now would only go over Donner summit at 40 when in stock condition (prior to EZ) I was going over at 55mph. With your EZ and DD2's I think you will spank him good, but I do agree get past the turbo lag

If you had an auto you'd be set but the lag is gonna kill you w/a stick.

Rolling race you should eat him alive. set the EZ on max and catch him on the hwy.

I'd love to get a hold of this guy... they're the fun ones.

I'm not real sure what the fastest way to take off is, but I let the clutch out then nail it sometimes, and other times I slip it in 2nd. Slipping in second is probably quicker, especially if you have a 5 spd. 3rd might be a little too tall. Lag is bad in a start from still race. Everytime I shift, they catch up a little, then I gain again, then I loose a little, etc. This happens till 5th and 6th gear:D , then you get to amaze some people with your 7000 lb. truck. :D

with a 4. 10 rear... I take off in 2nd then foto 4th 5th and 6th. Try it once, I dont know how well it would do it with the 3. 55s. Try not to build to much boost from a stand styll or u will put the clutch out to lunch or break the rear free. If I try 3rd from a start... it spins the clutch but then again I have twice the rubber in the rear.

I drove a late eighties Chevy 454 dually automatic w/ 4. 10's back in high school. Traded it for a '93 5-speed 160 hp cummins.

Empty, the cummins was slower to about 40 mph. After that, the cummins would walk away from it.

They aren't anything to worry about speed wise. You'd absolutely kill him on the highway or with any sort of load.

Mike Arnett who runs Silver State Motorsports in Las Vegas told me a number of hopped up 454s have dyno'ed there. They usually expect 500 hp, and get around 220.

I'd just request trailers. Put 10,000 lbs behind each truck, start side by side and go 1 mile. Is there something else---- oh ya put $500 on it. take his money and pride. He is so rapped up in his bow tie he needs a reality check.

Even if you drag race him you will win put show him what pulling power is.

OK, so my new clutch is in the mail and I decided to practice a few starts last night.

I tried holding the brake with the ball of my right foot and dialiing on some throttle till I had 15# boost but all that did was light the tires and do a hellacious burnout when I let the clutch out.

Was kinda fun :) but not so good for starting, so I tried letting the clutch start to grab and then dialling the power smoothly and slipping the clutch for about 10 feet so the revs never went under 1200, then I floored it. That was much better and very fast accelerating so I had to hook 3rd immediately and then 4th.

I hadn't ever done that hard a start and, quite frankly, I was blown away by how hard my truck accelerates - can't imagine trying to hook up with the HP some of you guys have.

Tried the 2nd to 4th shift, but I need to practice that as it's too easy to screw up. I think I'll stick to using all the gears as my NV5600 seems to be one of the better shifting ones.

Does anyone have a chart which shows shift points? At what rpm do I want to be in in the next gear when I shift - 1800, 2000, more, less ?

I love hearing the turbo growl through the AFE but might have to replace the turbo ring as it's pretty loud in the cab now and I don't want the airbag to complain :{

The EZ defuels around 2800 so shifting before 3100 is a must. I'd bet on hitting the clutch between 29-3100. in low gears its hard because it revs so fast. feather the throttle a bit to take it easy on the clutch.

My Drag Comp pulls to the redline and makes a HUGE difference on shilft points. a 3200rpm shift only drops back to around 2500rpm. It's hard to tell exactly while hangin on.

OK, the way I launch. .

use 4x4, shift out after the first shift in the transmission

launch at around 2200, or higher if your clutch can take it.

Try to hold it at your lauch rpm till the clutch starts to catch up with the truck and hammer it. it will take a little while to get used to this. Its a good idea to get used to sitting against the seat. Maks it easier to drive. that shift to 3rd is a little hard.

take Gene's advice. it sounds like you dont have the expertise to get through the gears fast. and you may panic and miss a shift. if you do, second gear and dump it. do you have 4wd? if so use it.

just try to get him around 40-50 and roll into it. he WILL loose. I would also say get the clutch in first too.

you have to know when to pick your races, and it doesnt sound like you should pick any short races right now.

I used to take off in 4WD, second gear and not let up until i was out of gears. but i grew up racing T5's in mustangs. :D

I'm 2WD so don't have the luxury of a hard launch. My shifting skills are slowly coming back but the shift 2nd to 3rd is pretty slow so starting in 3rd would work well if I had a clutch sponsor LOL, wonder how long will my stock clutch last slipping it hard in 3rd. For that matter I wonder how long my, still in the box, Con OFe would last. I need practice for that.

Might have to embarass myself at MM on the drag strip.

I'm hoping to catch my buddy when we are both towing, my truck hardly notices the trailer - in fact it likes the load as it builds 30+ lbs of boost pretty fast and then I have to watch the speedo so as to not blow past the 55mph CA limit for towing (like I've never done more than 55 with a trailer... )

If you have the guts to go out on the track, it is not an embarrasment no matter what happens.

Real racers understand what it takes to get out in front of everybody.

Hey, I was heckled by West Virginians, that is as bad as it can get!
