What would be the right AFE for a mild 99

Thanks, TDR Staff

Big thanks to Steve from AFE

Eric @ Vulcan Performance.

Finally - after almost 100k miles - I am thinking of bombing my 99. I want to plan it out and do it right and get the right pieces the first time. The neighbor gave me a $50 coupon that I can use at Summit Racing and get an AFE Proguard 7 filter, but I have use it in the next few days. Should I go with the drop in, stage 1, or stage 2?

I haven't figured out all of the pieces yet, but the loose plan is roughly exhaust, RV 275 injectors, and a Smarty in addition to the AFE.

Thanks in advance

I covered airflow and dyno HP in TDR Issue 37, p. 26. Under 500 HP, the stock airbox and filter were sufficient, especially if you remove the “collar” from the airbox to the fender. .

Joe D - thanks for the reference - I've got to track down that issue. I know I have it here somewhere...

Nunya - how long have you had the filter? I just wondered how cleaning was.

I'm running the setup that Joe mentioned on my '01. Something to think about for those of us on a budget is that you can buy the AFE Progaurd7 filter and then buy the PSM cold air kit later. It's a very nice setup for a "sleeper".

cleaning the filter is a no brainer, I have a self installed PSM mod to the airbox and filter is still in good shape since last cleaning 8K ago and traveling accross the U. S. , great setup so far, been on since 2K, now at 37K
