Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) what would you do next?

I got my injectors in and I want to do the next upgrade. I am just wondering would the fuel plate or governor springs be the best thing. My lift pump is new and my overflow valve will be installed tomorrow. With the injectors it does run good but I would like more power without blacking out the light behind me.

What truck are you working on? What are the details about it? A 4k gsk would be my next mod, and timing also. What about the dowel pin?

dowel pin is done. the engine I am working on is a 97 6 bt. I put this in my suburban running it with a 47 re ( built trans)



Also I did not think I could run 4000 without doing the head bolts.

The TST fuel plate is great for making more power.

All you need to run 4000 is hd valve springs. Head bolt/stud issues are related to high timing and boost pressure above 45 psi. The gsk will open up your power band and you'll be happy with it. I have mixed feelings about plates. My 95 didn't respond to the #6 plate, but I pulled the plate out of my 97 and its great. Most poeple do see good results from a good plate like a #10, #100, #0, ect.

You do have gauges, right? A plate and setting the timing to about 15. 5-16is my opinion. Unless you plan to do some serious racing a 3K GSK (gives about 3500 usable RPM) is my choice. I do have HD valve springs, but had to do the exhaust springs for my exhaust brake anyway.

OK thanks for the help. Now if I use 4000 over 3000 is it worth it in the long run? Will the engine hold up with these. Why would I use the 4000 over the 3000?

Also If I use the 4000 do I need 12 springs or 6?

If I use the 4000 what will rpm will I actually get?

I am thinking of going with g springs over the fuel plate right now.

Also I have to figure out where the best place is to get these

Joe go with the 3K GSK unless you're planning to get pretty radical. The 3K GSK runs strong to about 3300-3500 RPM, not sure how far the 4K will take you. With the 3K you'd probably be fine just swapping the exhaust springs, with the 4K definitely do all 12. The 4K springs are a little more finicky and trickier to get the idle RPM right and not have hairtrigger throttle response or shuddering at certain RPM.

Yea this is a family / fun ride. I do want more power but do not want alot of headaches to go with it. I did like how the 75 hp injectors run so I figured more rpm will help like everyone says.



I just can't see how 800-1000 rpm will be that much better. lol



I figured 1800- 2000 would be perfect.

The governor spring kits won't give you any more power, just more usable rpm. If you are going to do HD springs you should, IMO, do all 12. Intake valves will float just as easy as exhaust. I bought my GSK from PDR.

PDR Diesel Performance and the springs from Cummins. You might consider doing the valve seals when you have the springs out. They are pretty inexpensive. Genos carries the valve spring tool.

Ok I got 3000 gsk and truck runs good. I also got afc springs but did not install them yet . That along getting a fuel plate is going to be another story.

The easy, and cheapest, next step is to modify your fuel plate. Remove your fuel plate and grind it to be closer to a #10 - shown in the left picture. It's not rocket science, anything close will work. If you end up with too much smoke you can slide the fuel plate toward the back of the engine to clear it up.

I also attached a picture showing all of the various fuel plate shapes, so you can see what people are talking about. The reason for the bumpy shapes toward the bottom of most plates is to avoid overfueling - to keep the exhaust temperature from going through the roof.

After you do this, be ready to put in a valve body and stronger torque converter. My guess is that this will make your lockup clutch slip or worse if you're not careful.

Now, here's MY question: How did the 75hp (ddp2) injectors affect your fuel mileage? My guess is it got better if you keep your foot out of it?

It is to early to say. My old injectors were shot and needed replaced. I do see an increase on mpg but not sure just yet.



Also my trans is upgraded already so I hope it will hold up. Oo.

I'm thinking when the valves float and the tappets lift off the lobes they probably smack the cam pretty hard when the valvesprings slam them back down. And the valves smacking the seats probably doesn't do them a lot of good either. If you get the 4K GSK definitely get the HD 60 lbs springs for exhaust and intake valves.
