I have a 1989 W250 4x4 auto, 3. 07's with a trashed body, fair frame and a flatbed.
I am purchasing a 1990 2wd dually with no motor or transmission.
It is an original Cummins auto. It has a rearend but it needs gone through and regeared.
Body is very nice. Frame is nicer than the other truck.
I would swap in my interior.
I want 4wd.....
I'm thinking out loud here... . Should I (which is easier)
Swap cabs fenders bed, rearend etc... ... and have a 3/4 ton/1ton conversion or... .....
Bolt in front axle, engine transfer case etc into dually and have 1 ton dually 4wd.

Will electrical need changed? Doesn't the 89 use an outside regulator where the 90 uses the PCM?

What else should I do regardless... . new springs etc?
Sorry lots of questions... .
Who has done it?
What WON'T swap?

Thanks, KO

If it has a non 3:07 geared housing in it now. You will not regear it to 3:07's. The 3:07 housing is its own animal. A 3:54 and up housing is different.

The break off for the external regulator is 91. 91. 5's had the alt controlled by the PCM.

If you want the $X$ then swap the body over and don't worry about the training wheels due to the wrong axle gearing.

Id either find a nicer truck and do a CTD conversion

If i did not do that id un bolt your cab then bolt the other one in its tons easier to fix your frame when the cab is off ,do the repair work then install the cab and nose , thus keeping your current vin #

Im thinking about doing this to my rough 92 cab with a buddys nice 73 dodge parts cab with factory ac

The 4x4 is from Ohio... with the typical bit of rust on it. Not rusted out but rusty.
If I go that way I will clean up and POR-15 the 4x4 frame.
The dually frame looks like it came from Texas basically showroom fresh looking.

I was figuring on going the cab/bed/fender swap route especially since both are Cummins trucks with a/c cabs.
Good time to put on new springs... ... . put the Borg shaft in.....
This could get expensive... ... .

Are you sure this is correct? Don't mean to hijack this thread, but my truck is an intercooled 91. 5, and has an externally regulated alternator

ShortB-

After doing some more research it looks like that stuff was changed when they went to an intercooled engine.

But it's a Dodge, they don't follow rules.

My buddy has a 98 that by the build date etc it should be a 12V but it's a 24V

Poor guy

I was told the 90 has "the correct axle" for the truck in it.
If so and it was an auto, would it be a 61? and that would mean the gears could be swapped from the axle in the 89 to the 90...
Am I thinking right?
Sorry I should say there are no gears in it right now.
Empty housing with the axles

If the 90 has any other gears than the 3:07 in it. It is the wrong housing. Our rear axles are a 70 models. The 61's were the front axles.

The 3:07 axles are a one off build. They were only built for Dodge for nonOD auto equiped CTD trucks. No other MFG used that gear.
