Truck Driver

Picked up what I did 25 years ago after getting flushed out of the semiconductor industry.

I do local drop and hooks with a set of pups. Spend more time breaking and putting the set together then I do driving.

That and professional barn cleaner.

Been a union laborer (Local 840) for 10 years. Hopefully retire at 49, started when I was 19 . Spend most of my time bent over massaging this gray, rocky looking crap. When I'm not working I'm thrashing on my old 67 SS Chevelle or drooling over an old roundtop Coke machine!Oo. :--)

Basically, I am a Mechanical Engineer who helps our field mechanics with any engineering on existing sites, vibration studies, noise studies, air/fuel control problems, failure analysis, maintenance studies, warranty negotiation (with our vendors AND customers), and the list goes on... .

Jack of all trades and a master of none.

That was the old me4osu.

Now, I am a Project Manager for a large natural gas transmission company and utility. Now, I get to be the customer of my former employer. :D :D Sweet.

Neat site. I like the old iron. However, it is not us "smart engineers" who deserve the blame for replacing these units with new high-speed recips or turbines. The blame really lies with the EPA (air-quality) regulations and parts availability. Not to mention the lawyers who capitalize on injuries due to things like open flywheels, open cross-head guides and lay-shafts.

Large gas engine/compressors used to be evaluated on $/BHP-year over the 20 year or more life of a project. The integral engine/compressors reigned supreme.

Now they are evaluated on $/installed BHP - in other words, just the front end costs. The high speed separables win that battle.

The same thing has happened in other industries (e. g. , marine, power generation, etc. ). It's largely a result of the "quarter-to-quarter", Wall Street driven focus of American companies versus the old approach of "what's best over the long haul".
