Dodge Dakota + Banks + Cummins

1986 Ford 6.9 diesel headers.

We went to our our girls' kindergarten, and 1st grade orientation last night. Got to meet their teachers, coaches, librarians, etc. Even got to met their bus drivers and check out the bus! They are in a brand new elementary school, everything was shiny and new, including the buses! They were Internationals, and the emblem on the hood said DT408. I was wondering, what are the specs on this engine? Until last night, all the International buses I have seen had either the DT 444, (powerstroke), or DT 466(I6 similar to B or C Cummins).

searched google and all i could find is this

well up here in Buffalo all I ever did for 4 years it seems was change head

gaskets on 9 liters that and cranks we had more come apart than we did run .

On the DT issue actually the DT 408 was one of 3 new generation DT engines

made has no relation to the old 466 or the 360 the "new Generation DTs were

the 408 466 and 530 the 408 made it one year it wouldnt pass smog tests and

smoked ike a bear in cold climates. they then ran into emissions troubles

again later so they made the 466 and 530 new generations electronic. That is

the acurate history of the later DTs . But on the 9 liters you are the first

to tell me of good luck with one in a bus fleet . I have heard of some with

trucks have little trouble but most bus fleets here in my area had nothing

but trouble. that and the fact that they were a ******* to work on is why I as

a mechanic refer to them as junk or boat anchors.

They must have gotten the 408 cleaned up, if it's the same engine, because these buses were brand spanking new. I don't what year model they were, but maybe a new DT408 debuted for 2003?
