Bill,

Go to an International truck dealer and ask for a "cab load switch" for a medium duty truck like a 4700. This is a heavy duty relay that is designed to be operate "on" all the time and can safely handle 50 amps through it. It looks like a heavy duty starter relay and can be mounted on your engine firewall or fender. I have used one as a battery isolator for years.

Bill

PS I'm not sure, but I'm told that Freightliner trucks and John Deere tractors use a similar relay. These relays are designed to take heavy electrical loads off the ignition switch.

Hey, all! This is my first post! I love this site and have learned alot here. But I don't fully understand what youre asking. I have a fiver, and when I'm plugged into my truck and its running it charges the batteries and runs the camper, but when I'm not running it wont run off of the truck. How can I run the camper off the truck when my truck isn't running. Thanks.

NAPA sells a continuous duty solenoid for this purpose. Looks like a starter solenoid, but it has only one small (trigger) terminal and is rated for continuous duty. I've used one on my Blazer for a couple years now. I beleive certain trucks with camper packages used them from the factory.

You want to make sure the relay disconnects when starting or the cranking amp load can soar way above any reasonable sized relay's ability to handle it. Instant burned up relay. Even a 100 amp relay will work if this is wired right. Usually available at any parts house.

I've got four batteries under the hood, all connected in parallel. I have a voltmeter in the coach to monitor them. Even four low batteries will crank my Cummins enough to start, so I don't worry about using a disconnect. So far, no problems. Solar panels keep them charged pretty good. As soon as I get my 2000w inverter in and my wife digs out her hair dryer, I may have to re-think this though. #ad

2 nd batt connected w/ main when driving
and w/ ign off the extra batt is disconnected, see 1 st gen 1993 trk only has 1 battery stock,

pcorssmit,

I had a 97 3500 and my current '00 3500 both have the camper and tow packages and the 12 volt charge line doesn't have a relay in the system to seperate the truck batteries from the RV battery. The 12 volt line is "hot" constanly--ignition key off or on. Granted the factory wire is only a 12 gauge and the distance it travels, it would take a long time to discharge the truck's battery. I like the have the isolator(relay) in place. I have also installed a circuit breaker protected 10 gauge wire to my trailer/camper hookup socket for more capacity and a faster charge(less voltage drop) when traveling down the road.

Not as cheap as a relay but a High Current Diode can be used (I do for my alternator feed to the power box (?? cant remember its designation) and when the truck is running, I have power from the alt feeding other ckts. You could splice a diode into the charge line, it will always be hot but you wont be able to draw down the battery on the hot side (will charge the battery on the trailer but not let the truck draw from that battery or if you reverse the diode you wont be able to charge the trailer battery but could draw from it). This has it draw backs but you can get an idea of the way a diode "acts" as a one-way valve (a relay will go both ways when connected).

Hope this helps some of you more "engergenic" types with some of your projects.

Bill, I think it was on an older Ford that I saw the relay. It was my buddies dad's truck, and I think it was factory, but I could be wrong. The truck was setup for a slide in and had a large auxilary deep cycle under the hood.

Pete

Pete,

I had a Chevy Suburban, 454 gas, set up that way. I ordered the tow package and auxiliary battery. It came with a deep cycle battery and a relay to seperate the cranking batery from the deep cycle battery when the ignition was off. The 7 way plug at the rear had the "Hot" 12 volt connection wired to the deep cycle battery.

Dodge uses a relay on the trailer running lights as part of the towing package. I don't know why they didn't go ahead and put one in the 12 Volt charge line too--2 reasons: 1. The designers/engineers have never used a trailer or camper. 2. The cost accountants said that extra $10 cost was too much. Probably no. 2!! They charge enough for the package already--whats another 10 bucks on a $30,000+ truck!!

While they are at it, they need to use a 10 gauge or 8 gauge wire all the way to the connection instead of the 12 gauge dropping to a 14 gauge on the charge line too. On the Camper Package, they need to make an electic hookup pigtail on the frame rail the front of the truck bed for making the camper electric connection.

bill,

Would that be Navistar Part No. 1619520C91 ?

I have one here by that number in a box. You got a good price on it--I paid a little more for mine from my local truck dealer. I guess that's because I used to work for them. #ad
