What's a good 30"+ chain saw?

I'm with BV. . either of his suggestions are very good choices. . in your neck of the woods there should be some good saw shops. . they night have some good rebuilds available if your looking for used,,[that is a pro size, beware of non rebuilt used on want ads as they will be worn out. . MHO]

I have a Jonsered I really like. I hear the Echo saws are surprisingly good too.

You can't go wrong with Stihl or Huskavarna, either.

In my case the choice was due (in part) to local availbility of parts and service.

A 30" bar may require BOMBing. <grin>

I have an Echo I've had for over 20 years (it doesn't have all the "safety" dodads). I don't use it as much as I used to but it's worn out four chains. The only parts I have ever replaced other than chains are starter ropes and air cleaners. It still starts right up and cuts good. Of course, an old logger (my father-in-law) showed me how to sharpen it correctly.

I have a 36" Stihl and a 30" Husky. Both are very good. The Stihl being bigger is a great work horse.

Husky 272 or 2100 would handle a 36" bar real easy. With a bar that long I prefer to use a skip tooth chain. Pulling sawdust 36" through the cut with a std. chain gets pretty full and takes longer to cut through.

I'm looking for a good used chain saw with a 30" or more bar.

I found a McCulloch Super Pro 81 with a 36" bar that I'm interested in but I can't find anything current about McCulloch on the internet. Did they get out of the chain saw business?

Any suggestions on a good saw model that will handle a 30" plus bar?

Personally I like the Stihl or Huskavarna brands. The McCulloch's I have seen/used have been pretty good but a lot louder - Guess it doesn't matter with a set of ear plugs.

A tree cutter in VA, who cut down a couple of Dad's junk trees, made a pointed remark. He said if you buy anything other than a Stihl, when you get home you should open your trash can, drop that new saw in it, then go out and buy a Stihl. He *might* be a little biased. #ad


One of my brothers bought a Stihl some years back and never had any problems until recently. Seems it started running lousy. He set it down and used the other Stihl my oldest brother bought. He then forgot about it until we had to cut down a broken elm in his back yard. True enough, it was running lousy. My brother was a little chastened when I opened the gas tank and told him to put fuel in it! I didn't laugh, because I know that sort of thing happens when one gets older. #ad

The problem was the saw was running rich and was using fuel faster than he expected. After fueling and adjusting it, it ran just fine, cutting down that tree and three of a neighbor's trees.

Stihl is known as a good saw. Dont' know about other brands, though, having never owned or used them.

I make my living with chain saws and only use one brand. Stihl. I have two 020Ts, one each of the 024, 028, 034, 064 and 084.
I have owned or used Husky, Poulan, Echo, Homelite, McCulloch, Jonsered, Olympic and Shindaiwa. All of them did not hold up under hard commercial use and pretty much died after six months. Some of my Stihls are going on 10 years. I've learned buy the best in anything and you buy it once. Buy junk and you buy it twice.

With almost thirty years land surveying experience, I can tell you that a chainsaw has played some critical roles in making a profit while surveying in the woods. If you buy that as a credential... ... ... . Stihl (Second choice is so far down the line, it isn't worth mentioning... . Husky).
BTW, explain to your vendor what you are doing, because it usually takes two models to get it all done efficiently #ad

I have been heating with wood, off and on for over 20 years. I've had Stihl and Husqvarna saws along with my 26 ton Iron Oak log splitter (Honda powered of course). I like the Husky better but only marginally. One thing is for sure (in my opinion) any other saw other than Stihl and Husky are crap! I've used many of the other brands of saws and wouldn't take one for free! Just my opinion.

I Bought a STIHL 036 PRO and burn a lot of wood, so this is the best saw I`ve ever owned. The old saying "you get what you pay for" is so true. Now if I could figure out a way to patent a saw with Cummins ISB power,I would be rich!Hmmmmmm.

I have the Stihl 026. I got it because I wanted a reliable saw and that is the brand that EVERYONE uses around here. I haven't heard anything bad about the Husky saws either. I also got the Stihl because its light and I'm a wussy. But I can cut wood all day with this light saw. Just my $. 02.

I spend about 400 hours a year on a sthil 044 with a 28" bar. Good combination at this altitude. Double the bar length will give you an idea of some of the trees and rounds it takes on.

If you really want to run a big bar(32"on up)look for a 056 or larger. Madsens is a good place to look for a saw and they could even modify( #ad

I got a new 066 Stihl. I have a big 4 foot bar for it for the big ones. All I have to do is sit it beside a tree to make it fall from fear!

If you do have to fire the beast up to fall a tree, there will be enough saw dust on the ground to fill the bed of a small truck up.
