Anyone Read "The motor Oil Bible"

Southerner?

Since I now have a high speed connection, I've been getting ton's of pop-ups, spam, ect, what are some of the better blockers available that you use?

Thanks, Rob

Thanks Doc, but I already have that, and "ad aware", and am still getting a boatload of spam. I just got 3 while I typed this. Anything else I can do?

Hey Rob,

There are several things that you can do to stop the pop-ups and pop-unders.

1) Hardware firewall (usually found with a router - about $50 bucks for a router and 4 port switch) Your first line of defense.

2) Software firewall - ZoneAlarm is free (www.zonealarm.com) Mandatory in today's world.

3) By default, Windows starts several services that should never be run. The one that might impact you here is Windows Messenger Services. This is NOT the Windows Messenger for chatting. This service was designed to allow administrators to send you messages. This has been corrupted by spammers to send you their drivel. Look in Control Panel under Administrative Components then Services. Make sure you disable the unnecessary services. More information about stopping unnecessary Windows services is available on www.blackviper.com

4) DO NOT USE Microsoft's Internet Explorer. I use Mozilla 1. 5 with a built-in pop-up blocker. I never receive pop-ups that I do not specifically request. Free from www.mozilla.org. An alternate on the same page is FireBird. It is Mozilla without e-mail, chat and other unneeded stuff. Another option is Opera.

5) PC Magazine's CookieCop ($3. 95) I have been using CookieCop on my wife's windows box for many years. It is a great addition to the other items mentioned above. pcmag.com in the downloads section.

6) Selectively surf. Don't re-visit sites that generate pop-ups and send them a note saying why they won't receive your visits any more. Maybe they will get the message.

7) Use Linux. I just had to say that.

8) Use Spy Bot Search & Destroy. This catches stuff that Ad-Aware does not.

9) Pest Patrol

10) With all of the above, I have never received a virus, trojan, worm and do not receive pop-ups unless I request them (i. e. on-line banking uses a lot of pop-ups).

11) Don't surf. OK, that may be a little harsh.

I use Norton Internet Security with Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Haven't had a pop-up since. Spam is set just to warn because alot of forwarded emails from my mom is filtered as spam. It's expensive but trouble free and doesn't slow my system down.

Ok, so far I've downloaded zonealarm, and mozilla, and haven't got a pop-up yet (holding my breath). I did notice that Mozilla seems faster loading, is that possible? So far I like it, thanks again!

Rob,

If you don't see the Mozilla icon in your system tray, you can "pre-load" Mozilla. Check in Edit | Preferences. I don't have Mozilla at work so I can't say exactly where to find the option.

Oh yea, already did that, thanks for the tip though. BTW, still no pop-ups, virus's, or anything out of the ordinary, this is great!

Actually I also owe fest3er a huge thanks for making some router changes for me, since I have no clue how to do anything like that, thanks again Neal!
