I've been pricing Uniroyals, Coopers, Kellys, Firestones, and Michellins in 10 ply 235-85-16's. Lowest price is Uniroyal. Highest is Michellin. Best value seems to be in Firestone. What works best for you?

I rent cars all the time and I have a brand new 2002 Ford Explorer for the past week. Ford has always had Firestone tires on them, right? Well, this one has Michellins on it. I was surprised to see them.

My next set of truck tires are going to be Michellins or Dunlops.

if it where me i would only get the michellins. I have had very very good luck with them. No tread seperations and they seem to cup alot less. They also seem to hold their balance better. I have tryed about every brand out there and michellins are by far the best to me.

I would rather be cummin than stroken

Last 2 sets on my '91 were/are Uniroyals - got slightly less than 40,000 miles before one of them pulled a "Firestone" and tossed its tread, doing about $1800 worth of damage (rt. front sheetmetal). Figured it for an anomaly, so put on the set that's there now - about 30,000 miles with maybe 10,000 left.

BUT, my brother-in-law has a '95 dodge/Cummins, and HE keeps getting over 50,000 miles outta his, and he drives his truck probably harder than mine - I forget what he has, think they're Wranglers, but gotta check before I replace mine again. In any event, think I'll be trying another brand than the Uniroyals...

This is another one of those questions with too many answers.

We don't all drive alike, with the same loads or towing and so it goes.

However, to quote a famous Virginian, "As for me, give me Michelins... . "

I have only used Michellens for years. Tryed one set of Good Years. 1200=34=16 and removed them in 200 miles. side wall would not hold up. The load rating was vary High. It was very squerley with the loads and in the rain it was real bad=bad.

I am running Perelli's(sp?) right now. I have 50K and expect another 10-15. Shortly after buying the truck, I pulled the Dunlops due to 2 bent rims, uneven wear and possible tread seperation. They seem to be a little loose on corners but I do not know if this is the tires or the truck.

Ol Blue only gets the Best. A round of Michellins please. Usually get @60-70K out of a set. They ride good and feel safe when towing. Nothing squirelly with a load. Dad tried other brands when he owned the truck, but they wouldn't last.

I'll second that DBF! There's no better tire than a Michellin, period! Best ride, best mileage etc. My truck has a set of Dunlop's and they aren't round, or so it seems when I'm going down the road. On my 1/2 ton Chevy, Michellin is the only tire I've ever put on that truck that won't shake. I have a friend that has a 75 D350 Crew Cab Dodge and he's got a set of Michellin's on his truck. His rides like a car compared to mine. When these Dunlop's are gone, Michellin will take their place... ... ..... Racer

Has anyone tried Kelly? My '90 came with a brand new set of Kelly's and so far they seem to work really well. I haven't had a chance to tow with them yet though.

Thanks guys; I've had a couple of bad Michellins; everyone can make a bad tire. My Coopers on my Buick went bad after about 60,000 miles of abuse and STILL had plenty of tread left! I can get the SRMII's mounted and balanced for $90 each, so I'm going with Cooper. Thanks for steering me clear of Firestones; they came highly recommended down here!

For the last 30 years I have only been using Michelins on my vehicles. They are a little pricey, but in my opinion they are worth it.

Al, I too have been using Michellins since they were the only radial made. But they no longer ARE the only radial, nor the only GOOD radial. I've had a few bad Michellins, but overall, they probably have given me near the best service (other than the one set of Coopers I had). Michellin doesn't have a cheap line, but Cooper , like all other manufactureres, does. That could explain the negative comments on the forum about Cooper. Cooper gave me better than 60,000 trouble-free miles, and Michellin gave me better than 30,000 trouble-free miles. I'm buying top-of-the line Coopers at $90 per tire, mounted, stemmed, and balanced. Cooper being the only American owned, American-made tire leftinfluenced my decision a bit, but price and performance made up my mind!
