I have a 91 W350 4X4 Reg cab, 175,000 on it, 410 gears, new Getrag (15k on it), the engine has a broken cam and 5 bent push rods, haven't gone any further. Am ready to sell it, body is in good condition, starting to rust above the passenger windshield in the drip rail, small dent in front of the rear drivers tire. Anybody have a guess as to how much I should ask, also any resonable offers will be considered. My e-mail is -- email address removed --.

TIA

Remember the blue book value of your truck is only an estimation of its worth. I would suggest looking at similar trucks for sale in your area and then compare them to yours to come up with "fair market value". I for one think that the Kelly Blue Book value for 1st gen trucks is low. Most well maintained trucks of your style will sell for between 6,500 and 9,000 in my part of the country when Kelly Blue Book only puts a retail value of about $5,600 on it. My suggestion is to start high and drop it accordingly. Note: If someone wants a bank to finance the money to buy your truck, a bank will only lend according to NADA which tends to place the value of a vehicle below the Kelly Blue Book value. Hence, if you try to sell your truck above the Kelly Blue Book/NADA value you will need to sell it to a person with cash or a large enough down payment to cover the difference between your asking price and the NADA value. Good Luck! I see a lot of trucks like yours selling for $7,500 dollars in my area.

I just noticed your truck was also a 4x4 so my estimation was a little low. Kelly Blue Book still says about $5,600 but if it is in good shape it would sell between $7,500 and $10,000 here and if it was in excellent shape I have seen guys get a lot more than that. Remember, I live in the Northwest and four wheel drive trucks sell easily.

As you can tell I skimmed the post. With those issues the truck has a value much less than my estimation. However, if the rest of the truck is in good shape then I would still put its value not that much lower than what NADA would put for a running truck. My point was really don't use a blue book value for a 1st gen truck. Their value, I feel, is under estimated. If the truck did not have a broken cam and 5 bent push rods I wasn't that far off. Sorry for the skimming and quick reply!

Ken, You can bet money, some of the valves will need to be changed, and what about the pistons ? Have you pulled the head to see what damage has really happened ?? The is no clearence between the valves and piston and if a valve broke off it will really get expensive. Also is your truck intercooled ?

I my local area a couple of months ago. There was a 91 W250 w/cummins, auto, A/C, with a bad rear end listed. The milage was about the same. Body look good for year and milage. It was listed for $3250 by a junk yard also.

No I haven't gone any further in the engine, then pulling the front cover and finding the cam gear w/1st journal attached, the rest is still in the engine, I pulled the valve covers and found the 5 bent pushrods, all the valve's seem to be in place. as it was I driving when this happened, I was running back from NC after dropping the boat off at the dealers to get a little warranty work done, was running 65-70 and it was just like someone turned the key off, tried a few things the ppl on here suggested to no avail, had the truck flatbedded home, then tore it apart far enough to find the broken cam and bent push rods, didn't want to pull the heads, cause didn't know if I was going to fix it or not. I know the truck will pull anything you want to put behind it, but now it's time for it to go. I already looked at NADA and KBB, but with the motor problems I wanted to ask the experts for a real value, instead of pulling a number out of thin air, and everybody laughing.

Thanks

Unfortunately, if you have a wounded truck, I think the real money is in the engine. In other words if you have a broken axle or trans you are looking at +/- $1000 to fix it yourself, at least; if the engine is bad you are looking at a lot more. My feeling is maybe the truck is is worth in $1500 - $2000 range. Without the engine, it's just another old HD pickup. You can pick up a running gas job for that kind of money.

Of course you can get more parting it out, if you are willing to do it and sit on the stuff. Thierry just parted out a truck or two because he couldn't get a good price for them whole.

I had a '92 CTD 4x4 with a broken trans advertised for $3500 last year. Had a lot of calls, but I had to fix it to sell it. This is in line with the $3250 truck philip saw. So, maybe that's a good price range for a mechanically damaged truck (non-engine . )

I just think that while some people think they are adventurous, it takes a special person to buy a broken truck. The engine would be especially intimidating price-wise. Maybe you'll find someone out there who has a wrecked truck with a good engine. Otherwise, a used Cummins engine starts at $2500, if someone spent another $2500 on a dead truck, they could have bought a decent runner for $5-6K and not have had to do the work.

Sorry to be negative. Good luck with it.

One little note:

That front axle is probably worth $1500 to rockcrawlers here in California.

I might be willing to buy the broken motor off you for a g or so.

Ken,

Is your truck intercooled? If so, let me know I may want to buy some parts if you want to sell it off as parts. My email address is -- email address removed --.

Thanks,
