Alright guys, I've got a 4x4 96 2500 CTD with 194,000 on it. . first diesel of mine, Cummins will be the last. I've recently installed the ATS intake manifold, #6 TST plate, AFE stage 2 intake, and it has 5" exhaust and all gauges. This thing runs like a FN top i think. Soo the question is what's next guys, its an automatic! so do i go for trans upgrades or do i go for the injectors or turbo? I have tons of questions about timing adjs. / gov springs / and anthing to do with the pump!! Im lost. .

Definetly upgrade the auto. If it hasnt had any upgrades before you owned it, it wont take that #6 plate for too long before blowing up. Rebuilding a blown transmission is more $ than reworking a good one. You`ll also get good results with a timing change to around 16°, but no more than that or your headgasket goes to the crapper.

Hows your egts with that #6 and the stock turbo? you got that plate slid all the way back?

good luck

The previous owner says the tans was rebuilt at around 157,000 and it has a mag hitech pan on it. It shifts firm an what not so i havnt noticed any problems... it didnt even have a plate in it when i got the truck to put one in it!? good or bad? buut when i put one in it i have it all the way forward torwards the front of the truck, is that where the powers at?? the star nut has been turned some as well. i feel like an idiot but hey you have to findout somewhere right. it doesnt throw much smoke just some black puffs when i get on it but not a ton you know? I think its using fuel efficiently buut you tell me. my egt's never have reached over 800 i dont tow anything yet though.

A good way to tell if the trans has had anything done to it is how high it revs. What I mean is my stock trans will easily let the motor rev to the govener without making the truck move like it should. It hit's lock up and gains about 15mph real quick. The plate should be towards the front for most power. Next would probably be timing and gsk's and more fuel until the turbo can't take it anymore. But if the trans isn't ready that is the next thing.

good luck,

Cade

oh ya now that i think about that, whats the rule o' thumb on that guys. . if the probes behind the turbo. . which mine is, i only reach six when accelling hard i really dont think its ever hit 800 to be honest. i need to know more about these factory pumps and what i can do to it im talking from what "turning the pump up" means to aftermarket parts like gov springs an things of that sort. You guys have been awsome thanks for your help, preach on if you dont mind.

i belive it runs around 300 degrees coller or so if your max temp was around 800 that means you were around 1100 actuall i wouldnt take it past 900 if it were me that would be around 1200 actual but if im wrong someone please correct me, but mine is pre turbo and i can see up to 1300 with my set up. cant wait to get my water/meth kit in :-laf

A WOT run will yield in excess of 500 degrees difference between pre and post turbo temperatures.

Cruising down the highway the difference is usually less than 200 degrees.

thanks cooker didnt know that. i

i personaly would just drill and tap the manifold so you have an exact reading. i would search for that topic in the search engin ther are so many opinions out ther on how to put it in and where but most think in the manifold would be the best. hope this helps a bit. :)

I wouldn't worry about injectors for a while, the injectors on your 96 will work just fine until you start getting into BIG fuel upgrades (and you won't want those until after you put a new turbo in there anyway... )

Definetely look into getting the pump timing done, mine is set at 18* and I love it. gov springs will allow more fueling at higher RPMs (I recommend the 3k, 4k RPMs aren't meant for a diesel engine).

alright sounds good, lets hear some thoughts on retapping a new probe spot and as for a turbo, what kind?? if trans upgrade, then whats best?? another dumb question HOW do i have timing adjusted! lol
