Ok I got a quick question for everyone out there, how come no one likes the 24 valve engines? It seems like everytime I wander into the 12 valve discussion forum everyone is rippin on the 24 valve engines

I mean I like electronic controlls, easy to make power with, you dont have to take apart the injector pump to change things, and it has 24 valves so it can flow more air. But maby someone can explain the pros and cons of each engine to me.

Some have had lift (fuel transfer) pump and VP44 injection pump failures. My truck (delivered 8/15/01) is still on the original lift and injection pumps and has never been back to the dealer for anything - no warranty problems whatsoever. I certainly can't complain about my 2nd generation 24 valve.

the worst problems are between 98. 5 - 00. 5. lots of weak blocks that made it over warrenty, but broke right afterwards(98. 5-02), injection pump failures, lift pump failures, constant sending units going bad and messing with inj. system, just not as reliable as the 12v as a whole. 12v's have their share of problems as a whole, but most of those can be fixed easily or taken care of before they happen.

It's mostly just in-house rivalry between the owners of 12 valve engines and the 24 valvers. Nothing "wrong" with the 24 valve engines - some issues with the fuel injection pumps - partially due to some internal issues on early pumps, and mostly related to poor diesel fuel quality in our USA fuels. Being aware of potential problems and taking steps to reduce problems is neither hard or expensive - and the great flexibility of the VP-44 over earlier purely mechanical pumps is hard to beat.

I love mine, I don't fear it, and so far, it's been great! ;) :D

jealousy is a terrible thing ... :p

not enough valves ... killer dowel pins ... not able to turn the power on and off with the flip of a switch ... stinkin' up the neighborhood on a cold morning ... why if it was'nt for the pump on those motors they'd just be boat anchors :-laf

Seriously though, just look at the handle, "2broke2smoke". Bet all those valves made him that way. :-laf I just doubled my stock horsepower for basically no cost! Installed some used injectors from a friend, ground my stock fuel plate, put on a BHAF and removed my restrictive exhaust. Now, granted, your truck came stock with more power, but what would it cost you to gain 150 HP? I can also run several alternative fuels without worrying about damaging my injector pump. I can work on it myself. I like my 12V.

Well you see what i have in my sig. . i tried for over a year to find a 12 valve for sale, nothing doing not to be had, they were either not for sale or blowed engine(most are not for sale)

The pros and cons... well in my opinion i would prefer the oil lubricated fuel pump over the fuel lubed pump, 12V is easier to turn up and no electrical things to deal with like computer and so forth, 24V does have more valves which means more effiecincy.

So far 114000+ on my 24V, i have not one bad thing to say about the engine a great one if nothing else, I recently found this morning in a magazine a 250 for sale with 12V, you damn right i called and am waiting return call back, I lost my taurus to a deer a week ago, totaled the car and dad is in need of a truck more than a car and this one would be perfect and it has all the balls with the cummins without that blue oval price tag, I love the cummins, dad is more of a ford man but he to has come to love that rattly Cummins and he would never have a powerstroke.

Where do you get that? I think the consensus is the 12V is capable of more power. ;) What are most of the high power guys running? If it's just the pump then why aren't they running the 24V with a P7100? As far as fuel efficency, I regularly get 23-24 MPG with daily driving. What are you getting? :D

Hey, you guy's started it :p :-laf

I'm going back home now. :D

12v, 24v... . come on now they are both awesome motors... . as for them darn common rail sissys!!!! You can hardly tell its a DIESEL!! SShhhh listen..... do you hear that? yep its dads 05 CTD running! haha

12v's are nice but how about your cup holders HA!! I couldnt keep a pop in my 95 1500!

Its a hard thing to say for sure, but I believe that the 12vs get better economy than the 24vs. I remember when they were touted early on as getting a 5% bump in MPGs but that never seemed to come to fruition. I have owned a 92,95, 97, 99, 05, and now dropped back down to a 98 12v. My current truck gets better than any of the others. The worst was the 99 and 2nd worst was the 05. All within 3 mpgs of each other. All similar setups (no 4:10s) etc. So I myself have a hard time buyin into the more valves equal better MPG. I think appeasing the ol' EPA has more to do with it than anything.

WELL Jeeze, my dad bought me a new Corvette, so *I* got LOTS of performance FREE!

Figure the REAL cost of your "free" mods - like MOST would have to do, then compare YOUR dollar per HP with what I accomplished with a $549 Edge comp...

What performance mods you find in vacant lots and dark alleys HARDLY rates consideration vs real value of BOUGHT mods... ;)

I like the 12v better in that it's quieter than the 24. Doesn't sound like the engine is rattleing apart.

I think the 24v are more "peppy" on the bottom end. Also I like the non-stiff gas pedal. On the 12v it's hard to push sometimes. Worse when cold... course this is because if the mecanical linkages.

I'd buy either one. IF I had a choice I'm not too sure to be honest.

Whew... ... we got wadded up real quick!

Gary, I think we're all on the same side here. :)

OK, money is money. Parts is parts. If parts cost you nuthin' then parts cost you nuthin'.

  1. Ground plate... ... ... ... . $0
  2. Used injectors... ... ..... $0
  3. Straight pipe... ... ... ... $65
  4. BHAF vs. stk/time..... $15
  5. Getting Gary riled up... ... ... ... ... ..... PRICELESS!

Now I'm REALLY going back home! :D :D :D

I had a 97 12V and loved it. Somebody else decided to take it a way from me by crossing the center line and totaling it out #@$%!. I know have a 01 24V HO, it is noisier in the cab but I can not complain at all. I am a Ford man at heart but would never buy a power stroke. I love my Cummins and will never own anything else. In my opinion either one is good, but this is just my opinion.

No, you just have to replace it when it dies!

As for the "flip of a switch power", I have that. It's called a valet switch.
