I would love to just get along, Its those damn 12 valve guys that are preventing us 24 valve guys from agreeing on anything :p . It's mechanical meets electronics again and thats how the auto industry is going. 12 or 24 valve just be greatful you dont have all that emissions crap that cars have on them :D :D . And I can legally run a straight pipe :D as can alot of cummins owners.

12v's are nice but how about your cup holders HA!! I couldnt keep a pop in my 95 1500!

Ian

Fixed the cup holder problem for less than a dollar. Bet you can't fix much on your 24v for that.

Personally, if someone walked up and offered to give me one, I'd take either one as long as it didn't have four exterior door handles(OK, I'll take that back, I'd take one of those also if it was a gift).

Had both - '95 auto and 01. 5 6 speed.

Never modded the 12V and nothing ever broke inside the engine. However I did have to rig up a piece of string to pull on the throttle when the poorly designed cable seized up and broke on a weekend when the dealer's parts dept was closed. Also changed brake pads every 10K miles.

Have modded the 24V and nothing has broke inside the engine. It's never left me stranded but I've driven home twice with no clutch due to the hydraulics. Brake pads are good for 40K miles.

Oh yeah - the 12V from the factory was like a variable pitch constant speed propeller. The motor just revved up and the truck moved slowly forward. Couldn't really hear or see much in the way of shifting since the stall speed was close to the shift points of the auto. The 24v from the factory - well when it hit 1800 rpm it would plant you into the seat.

A bit more than a stock 25hp difference between 12V and 24V IMO.

Gary - get a grip. :-laf

Hey guys i just had to chime in here, since aquiring the 92 250 this past monday on the 28th I can't complain about neither in difference other than the fact that i for sure know what you guys were talking about in regards to auto vs manual don't get me wrong my 24V with auto is a horse and will pull most anything i throw at it plus it came back from KY with over 2700lbs in the bed with no problems, actually with the weight the auto transmission shifted smoother and didn't do alot of shifting back and forth.

Now on the other hand since getting the 12V with 5speed i have to admit with just 180hp under the hood and the manual behind it, she is a horse and bone stock to boot. Will i upgrade, nope i don't believe in it, but to each his own some guys like to build up to a sleeper truck thats great, others like to sled pull thats great, a few guys like to be able to pull a 30' camper with the kitchen sink inlcuded thats wonderful. But as for everyday pulling and hauling at stock design you got the horses and the torque to handle just about anything you can think of throwing at these engines, now take in mind the auto transmission on the 24V does need some help but at alittle over 114000 miles on it i have had no problems and of course it being auto i do try to help it along with ease of shifting.

And correct me if im wrong but wasn't the original design of this 12V cummins meant for industrial use when it first came out and then dodge and cummins got together. The 24V's are meant i thing to be more of a everyday truck engine and with the help of the epa and their emmissions crap, the 12V's just happened to be first and foremost a generator/industrial powerplant that happened to end up in a truck, and i am happy it happened. . Some like the V8 diesels, but for ground pounding pulling power and even in a gas engine the Inline six has it where it counts, and the valve cover on my 92 says it all (400 ft. lb of torque) and with only 180hp... I could care less about being able to pass someone but after driving this 12V up and down the mountains to work for a week, its amazing this thing cruises right along and just jumps up the mountain which you can actually feel as the boost builds up in the turbo, my 24V you have to press on the go pedal for that feeling, but thats just something i noticed as far as difference in the 2 engines.

Sorry this was so long :-laf

I love both of my trucks, neither one takes a second seat to the other, the KDP yeah a problem, the Lift pump on the 24v a problem. . but you just can't be them for all out grunt and raw power

True those powerjokes or the duracrap cant compete with a cummins for reliablity or low end power, and most of the problems cummins engines have are nothing compaired to the amazing workmanship and engenering that goes into something made by GM (yea right!!! HAHAHAHA thats funny I crack my self up)

I likes them all!

First, I'm suffering from a stomach cramp from the humor in this thread...

Second, I have all three trucks: 1st, 2d and 3d Gen and like them all.

The first gen W250 gets the best MPG (18 - 19) empty, but drops way down pulling my 20' enclosed carhauler w/ about 7K (drops down to 9 to 10 mpg). I've only had my 1st gen 93 about 5 months and no problems (133K). Straightpiped sounds good. New Monroe Gas Magnum shocks... gotta wear seatbels just to keep from hitting my head on the roof just running down the highway.

The 2d gen 3500 only gets 13 to 15 empty (it weighs 9,800 empty) and gets around 10 to 11 pulling 17K lb 5th wheel. I lost the VP-44 at 35,600 miles and got it replaced under warranty. I had extended warranty and fried the transfer case at 69,800, also replaced under warranty. ;) BD 4" exhaust... sounds the best IMHO and flat hauls butt.

The 2003 3d 2500 gen gets almost 18 -19 and gets 15 mpg pulling the carhauler. I almost hate to even mention no problems yet. Aeroturbine, sounds good, my second choice. I like the ride the best,

So, if it says Dodge and Cummins, I like it! :D

lets see, we have an industrial engine made for working long hard hours in tractors, straight trucks, bus's etc. , or an engine made for e. p. a. and consumer friendly operation. which would you want come 300 thousand miles when electronics start to fail all over the engine compartment???? which truck will be worth more ten years from now????

Electronics all over the engine compartment?

I agree with Wiredawg, they are all cool.

I want a 1st gen in a bad way, just can't justify why I need yet another truck to my wonderful bride. :-laf

A 12valve will pull a heavier sled faster

A 24valve with less power will out run a 12valve in a 1/4 mile sprint. Which makes the the 12v a good engine for a tractor, and a 24v a good engine for a daily driver.

yep your right the 12V was originally built for industrial use, well being in the bay of a 4x4 truck :), some like ride, some like comfort, others like to pull a building down, either way we got what really counts under the hood, none of us can deny that... :)
