What's te Difference in an IH 444E & PSD

Ok - what's the real difference between the PSD and the 444E? I notice for one that the 444E holds 18 qts oil... . weighs 930 lbs and up to 620 ft lb..... but what gives - is this just a better PSD?

Both just expensive repair bills in the making. J-U-N-K. There is a reason for all heavy duty engines being strait sixs.

Here's some of the stuff I've heard from my PSD buddies:



1) The PSD is emissions tested for light duty trucks. 444E is not.



2) The PSD has a different fuel control system. Some parts will go over to the 444E but not all.



3) 444E is rated higher for towing capacity and rebuild time (Medium Duty like the Cummins)



4) This one is far fetched but it sound like something you would here in a garage: The PSD has mostly proprietary components so that you must go to the Ford dealership for repiars. This allows for Ford to gain extra revenue and track their PSD's.

The Computers and most sensors are different. IH has theirs for the 444 and Ford has theirs for the PSD. Water pump is a little different and numbers are different as mentioned. The deep part of the oil pan is in front instead of the rear, and it holds 20 quarts of oil, not 18.

IMO they are pretty much the same engine except for the details. The 444 has it's problems to. Had one come in where I work once that was knocking bad. Pulled right side head and found no piston in one cylinder, just the rod bouncing around. All the pieces were in the oilpan.

Besides the extra oil capacity, there is a spin on/off coolant filter too.

Worked on 'em both... IMHO, the T444E is a much better engine than the PSD int he Fords. It runs better, has more power, and best of all... NO CACKLE PROBLEMS!!!
