When I turn on the ignition in my 05' there's a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment? It sounds a lot like a gas stove top trying to light the burner.

The injectors (solenoids) are actually opening and closing while the lift pump is running to bleed out any air in the lines. Given the low pressure of the lift pump, the internal "shuttle" can not even open against the spring, so the injector nozzle stays closed. All the fuel/air is returned to the fuel tank.
This is why these engines are so easy to restart after running out of fuel (or after draining the water), if you just bump the starter, it will self bleed for about 30 seconds.
And this is also why they will start more easily than a Duramax or P/S after running out of fuel, or draining the water.
