Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Erratic Fuel mileage

I just did the KDP tab fix and replaced the crank seal to hopefully fix a frontend leak. KDP was still seated but the bolt next to it was one full turn loose. 200k miles. I still have the leak and it appears to be coming from the gasket joint of the fixture holding the smooth pulley just above the oil pump gear. What is that thing? None of the manuels I have mention it. One time while the engine was hot I saw bubbles (very small ones) coming from the gasket joint. What to do?

Thanks,

Joe

Welcome to the forums! :)

The water pump has a smooth pulley. Held in by two bolts. I don't think it uses a gasket. I believe it an o-ring. There is a weep hole on the bottom side of the pump. Should be dry there. If coolant is drippng from it, then it needs replaced.

Welcome to TDR Land

Water pump is easy to change even if you have it all back together. bmoeller is right - no gasket or gasket-maker, just an o-ring. When I put a new pump on mine my compulsive nature FORCED me to smear a little Magic Lube on the o-ring. I figured if it's good for swimming pool pump o-rings it won't hurt on the water pump. Probably overkill. Got a new pump from NAPA for not many bucks - 60-ish I think. As a matter of fact, there was nothing wrong with the original pump. I was doing the KDP and figured what the heck, as long as I'm right here... So now I have the original for a spare.
