Ok, can anyone tell me what the difference is between 1st and 2nd gen 5. 9's? I am trying to decide which way to go on my upcoming transplant. Can a P7100 pump be put on a 1st gen, and if so, does that make it the same as a 2nd Gen, or is there a difference in the pistons, camshaft, head or other harder to replace parts? Injectors, turbo, etc are easy stuff, and would probably be changed out regardless of Gen. I'm finding it fairly easy to come up with complete '91-'93 trucks, which would give me all the mounts, wiring, air cleaner, etc for an easy swap, but I don't think I will be happy with the maximum amount of HP and torque that can be obtained with this motor, which leads me to look for a newer motor, but then will the mounts, wiring, etc match up with my first gen truck. Anyway, simple questions, complicated answers... . anyone got any ideas? Thanks guys.

Look up CrewCabDiesel, he's been there and done that and I think he has a 2nd gen engine. Lots of good info and pitfalls that he ran into. Looks like he has about the same year truck.

Good luck with your conversion and keep us posted.

Hutchew,
I am running a "early 91" Cummins. Benifits are most parts of the conversion are bolt on, over trying to make 2nd gen wiring work on a first gen. Also keep in mind that 89 to "early 91" have 9mm injectors that perform better than most aftermarket 7mm that the newer Cummins come with(talk to Big Don on injectors). Also the earlier Cummins have a HIGHER compression ratio to start with. Over all I like my 1st gen Cummins because it is very simple to work on(don't need a degree in computers to work on it). If you need any help with installion questions just e-mail me or post some questions, there are a bunch of us here that have already done it, and can save you some time, money, and grief.
