Can anyone tell me EXACTLY what the differences are in the engines on the 2001/2001. 5 vs the 98. 5. I have a 98. 5 and may have the opportunity to get a new one with lower mileage. Seems like a lot of people prefer the turbo on the 98. 5 over the newer ones outside of the HX40.

Brent, try www.dodgeram.org It's Dave Fritz' web site. Very informative. I'm not sure about what came on the 98, but I have a 01. 5 and this is what I have. I have the HO so I have the 6 speed, hx35 turbo with the 12cm2 housing, dana 80 rear end, disc brakes, no full length side moulding, only the length of the cab, no lighted vanity mirror, power mirrors, no rear tailgate plastic moulding, and a few other minor things. Hope this helps. P. S. Just rearead you post, I think the HO has bigger injectors, hardened valve seats, lower compressions pistons, with a different shape, and injector pump with different fueling curve.

ETH:
Peak Torque: 505 lb-ft (from 1600 - 2700 rpm)
Advertised power: 245 hp @ 2700 rpm
Governed Speed: 3200 rpm
Compression Ratio: 17:1
Maximum Boost: 26 psi
Turbocharger: HX35
The site also shows the torque curve for the uprate on the 1998+ 24V ETC motors. The ETH torque is a constant 505 from 1600 to 2700 whereas the uprated ETC has a definite peak torque of 505 at one rpm - approx. 2300 rpm.
If I get this site right, you may find some good information pertaining to your truck. http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/ram_frame.html
