Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) What's the difference?

From what I am reading, the 12v engine in '98 had 180hp with the automatic, and 215hp with the 5 speed. How did the two engines differ, in order to gain the extra 35hp? I am looking for ways to boost the power and torque in my newly acquired '98 so it doesn't seem so wimpy after driving my '06.

The 180 and 215 engines are the same. The injectors on the 215 are bigger.

The difference are in the P7100 pump.



To gain HP/Torque is easy just add a HP Plate to the P7100 and go form there.



Guages first,plate, new free-flow exhaust, new intake air sytem (bhaf),larger injectors, new turbo or larger exhaust housing,cam, studded head... It really depends how much HP/Torque you want.

I beg to differ. . The BHAF is a waste of time. . If you want to feel the difference, get an AFE intake. . I have had a BHAF, then AFE's version of the 880 filter with the Scotty II intake, Progaurd 7, and the best one out of them all is the regular Magnum force intake with the 54-10071 filter... BHAF made my EGT's too hot, Scotty II was nice, but you could not hear the turbo, Progaurd 7 made my EGT's a little higher than the regular 54-10071 filter... Good luck on whatever you get!!

I have the AFE Stage II on my '06. I really like it and the sound of the turbo. I wonder if the new Stage II for the '98 would be worth the money. The biggest difference I see is it comes with a smooth intake tube and it seals off the filter from the engine compartment. JH

then send the pump out for a recalibration (big fuel), bigger turbo, even more fuel, o-rings, twins, 5" exhaust, Stoopid pump, bigger twins, methanol injection... . You are stepping onto the slippery slope! Oo.



The stock airbox with a clean filter will flow a lot (keep an eye on the restriction indicator). Be sure and pull out the duct between the fender and the airbox, that is the restriction on a stock box. An aftermarket filter in the stok box will flow more but I don't like cleaning filters so I got a BHAF.

get the gauges and a fuel plate and just see what your temps are. you might not need to improve if your not looking for too much. no sence in spending money you dont need too unless you want to build for hp. i dont believe intakes can give you hp and havent felt any difference in 4 different trucks.

The 215hp motors also have a larger vibration dampner. And different wastegate calabration ( more boost)

From everything I've read/heard the auto & maunal trans engines are identical internally (except maybe the cam grind?) for each given year, but did change between some years because of emissions (ring land location, valves, head) but the list of changes was pretty short between 1994-1998.

I really like this truck, and it will make a great snow plow truck. The engine is nothing like my '06 for power, but I'm sure it will have plenty when I'm done. I have ordered a kit from TST which includes a #10 plate and KDP repair. I also ordered an AFE Stage II filter. I have straight piped it and removed the catalytic converter. Next week the automatic trans. comes out and to the trans. shop for a triple disc torque converter and new valve body, etc. to give it what it needs for pushing snow and pulling trailer loads. Thanks for all the comments. I'll see what all this does.

If I decide to change injectors, what are the recommendations?

I have a '98 12v 5 speed and a friend has a '98 12v auto. We both recently had our pumps on the test stand at the local Bosch pump shop. With a # 10 plate fully forward to just over 20 mm rack travel (21 mm is the max. ) and stock delivery valves, my 215pump pushed 419 cc of fuel/1000 strokes. That was without any "turning up" of the pump, which is basically just turning the barrels as far as possible yet still keeping them balanced. My friend had his turned up and with his custom plate (basically a 100 plate) fully forward at about the same rack travel and with 191 delivery valves, his 180 pump pushed 418 cc of fuel/1000 strokes. So his turned up pump with bigger delivery valves matches mine with stock valves and no barrel turning.



In a few weeks I will have mine turned up (the shop was supposed to do that the first time around, so they'll do it for free this time!) and I'm going to throw in his 191's just for a flow test. Then we'll have a fairly accurate idea of the flow difference between the two since they will be set up nearly identically.



The fundamental differences between the 2 pumps, according the Bosch tech, is a slightly different helix cut on the plungers and a little different profile of the pump cam.

We are both right. The damper IS different detween the auto (160 hp 3916436 - 210mm or 8 1/4" ) and the std ( 175 hp 3922435 - 235mm or 9 1/4" ) in 94 and 95 but IS the same in 96, 97 and 98 ( 3922435 ) which is what he asked. So I stand corrected ( on one foot :-laf ) As stated the 96-98 auto is 180 hp and the std is 215 hp which makes both over 175 hp therefore the larger diameter. Shadrach

The only engine that got the "little" damper was the 160 HP version. Everyhting else has a " big" 215 HP balancer. '94-'98. 5

I want to thank everyone for the advice on my questions on the 12 valve modifications. I just got the truck back on the road yesterday. The transmission now has a triple disc converter and a new BD valve body, and shifts great. The engine now has the KDP repair, valves adjusted, new #5 TST plate, AFE stage II filter. I already had straight-piped it. This is an early 98 with 128k. I'm looking forward to plowing snow with it, and using it a lot to pull my boat and other uses that will cut down on the build up of miles on my '06. The engine changes are mild, but impressive.
