My 04 cummins seized up at 390k miles, spun bearing.

So I purchased a replacement engine from a used parts place.

I know that Cummins made a change in late 03 (04 model).

I'm concerned that they sent the wrong engine. I already sent back the core so I cant compare the two.

Does anyone know what to look for to tell them apart? Mine was built 09/03, I dont have a build date on the replacement
but model year is '04.

Are they absolutely not interchangeable? Can I tell the build date from the Block Number? any help would be appreciated.

Tim

Easiest way to tell is look at the piston bowls. Re-entrant bowls are early 04, deep spray are late 04. The nozzles need to be 143 for early 04, 124 for late 04. You do not want to mix nozzles and bowls.

The late 04 will run in the early 04 programming, just not right. I would verify you have the correct configuration.

wow, ya mean like take it apart?

Any way to tell by lookin at the outside? He's already got it in the truck, reinstalling the accessories and front clip today.

My original ECM (?) installed on the replacement engine.

When I saw the front of the engine, it looked like the water pump config was different. I've changed it a few times and thought the bolts were roughly paralell to the ground. Replacement engine are closer to 45* off paralell.

Now that I am on my computer I will explain what I can do.

I can take your truck vin and find the esn of the original engine. Then I can take the esn from your replacement engine and compare CPL numbers, pistons, injectors, etc.

If you don't have an esn on the valve cover tag most reputable salvage yards are made to list the vin of the vehicle that the component was removed on the invoice. I can do it that way if needed.

Thanks for helping me out

VIN from my truck : 3D7MA48C14G130428

(replacement) Engine No (from white label on Black Plastic Cover) : 57110219

I sure hope it will work

The engine that came in your truck had ESN 57092929

Looks to me like you are good to go....CPL is a match along with Horsepower. Build dates very close as well.
