Over the last year I have had three intermittent incidents where the TPS stopped working for a minute, but started again either on its own or when I shut the engine down for a minute or two. I called the parts department at the dealer and was quoted a price of $535. 00 because it only came with the bell housing. Does this sound right, or should I be able to find a better price elsewhere? This is my first experience with a non-mechanical throttle.

Also, the check engine light came on at just under 114K. The engine is running perfectly but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Is there a common cause for this, or does it require a diagnostic check? Both incidents coming at the same time gave me a shock, as this would be the first real trouble I have had with this truck. Apparently it ain't a puppy any more.

Take it you're talking about the APPS? Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor IIRC, I paid around 400 for mine when it took a dump on me... intermittent dead pedal was the main sympton. What code is it showing?

I don't want to hijack your thread, but I do have a used APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor) that is in perfect working order that I would sell. I will sell it a lot cheaper than a new one too :). If you are interested, please send me a PM, or send me an e-mail to -- email address removed --. I will give you my number (Or send me yours)and we can talk. Good luck!

Thanks!

Well, don't this beat all. Both the Check Engine light, APPS and the annoying intermittent Lamp Out light have quit showing up. Never saw a code for the Check Engine light. I guess I should be happy, but to me a problem that comes and goes is worse than a definitive problem that gets fixed and put behind me. I think I'm going to let the APPS problem ride for a while, since it only seems to happen when I am coasting and not accelerating. I kind of get the feeling this the three problems are related to something electrical, though I have no real evidence of that. If there was a central wiring harness or single connection for all three it would make sense that I had a short at the connection, but I'm an old school engine guy and these new fangled, fancy engines are still somewhat of a mystery to me. Thanks for the help, everyone!

Crunch... . First lets address the lamp out issue. I see you have an 03 like myself, you may or may not be aware, but this is a VERY common problem with the 03's. Check your rear tail light bulbs... . One will be partially melted by the connectors. No big deal just replace the bulb... . it will happen again. There was a TSB that corrected the problem, however, it requires replacing the actual light fixture. I never had mine fixed, and I replace a bulb about once ayear (I actually carry spares in my tool box).

Second, the APPS issue. This will only get worse and leave you stranded (Never a good thing). It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when. The APPS does not trigger the check engine light either. It has a specific code (I will checkthe codes for you after I finish this post)..... Actually there are a few codes, one for high voltage and one for low voltage. It may not be an active code, it may be a stored code (You may need to have a code scanner pull the code if it is stored and not active). Now with that said, you may have issues that are causing the APPS sensor codes to act up... . Check your connections on your ECU and PCM. Make sure they are clean and all the way pushed in. There is a diagnosis procedure that is intensive based on your mechanical abilities as well. It will help you pin point the actual issue (I have that too, a member here e-mailed me that section from the repair manual).

I would be more than happy to help you further if you like, but I do not like to type that much... LOL. Please feel free to send me a PM, or e-mail me your number and I will give you a call, or if you like I can shoot you my number.

Do NOT ignore your APPS problem..... You will regret it!

Good luck!

The APPS that Timbo devised for 2nd gen will work on 03's. I have one on mine now. PM Timbo for info. Not sure of latest price - think it will be about $160.

Again, thanks for all the help. I haven't had a diagnostic device hooked up to check, so the only codes I would see are those that light up in the dash. Because the Check Engine light and the APPS are different problems I am going to take it in to the dealer to have it checked out. My dealer is competitive on prices, and will match other dealers so if I need a new APPS I would most likely have the dealer do it so there is some kind of a warranty. As I said, I'm not familiar with all the new electronics that are part and parcel of vehicles these days, so I would probably let the dealer check the connections, as well. As for the Lamp Out light, I did pull the left rear light lens and the bulbs all looked good with no melting. The Lamp Out light came on when I used the left turn signal and brakes. Glad to know there is a TSB for this. I had the left fixture repaired a few years back because of the melting.
