I just finished the installation on my HRVP44, lift pump, Isspro fuel pressure gauge and now a set of RV injectors. I want to make darn sure I don't have to go through this again, mentally or financially.

Are fuel additives good, bad or otherwise necessary. It is my understanding that the modern fuels today are low in Sulfur and (please correct me if I am wrong) vital to IP lubrication. how often and what brand would you guys recommend.

Yes, low sulpher, yes again lubricity is vital to the VP pump.

You can spend mucho $ for high tech additives. But the only thing you really need is lubricity. The cheapest source is 2 cycle motor oil. It is 99. 9% ash free and available at Wally World aka Bejing Place.

I started adding it when I read a report from Bosch on low lubricity and pump failures. I got the idea from another member who had 257,000 miles on his original VP. He added 2 cycle oil since new. Autozone sells a 99c mixing bottle, you just read the 100:1 scale and fill to the line with oil. We divide the gallons of diesel by 2 to get to the desired 200:1 ratio.

If we pump 20 gallons we fill the bottle as if we pumped 10 gallons = 200:1 on the 100:1 scale.

Lately we have been burning used oil from the engine, transmission whatever. We store it in a 5 gallon pail and pump it through a filter into the tank. In this case we use the true 100:1 scale because we want to use more. It's a felony to do this because we arent paying road tax :-laf Like I really give a rats hiney :D

I am still using te orgiinal LP and VP. Fuel pressure is good and no repairs to anything in the truck. I have never used any kind of additive in the fuel.

I now have 99,200 miles on the truck.

So when and if I wanted to run used oil, how much do I need to filter it? Can I strain it, or should I do something better than that? I would rather see reliablity but paying for something I can get for free? Come on.

I pump it through a 20 micron oil filter. The OEM FF will get anything else.

Every time you change your oil you discard 3 gallons of used oil. 3 x $3. 49 = $10. 47, about half what the fresh oil costs.

If you can get it bio diesel has a viscosity rating twice that of #2. B5 or B20 and no need for an additive.

I have run my used oil back thru my truck, but never thought of the 2 cycle oil, that is a great idea. I am also in favor of not paying the road tax on it! I dont give a rats hiney either.

Any kind of oil, as long as it is clean, should be better than no oil... . Right?

I've tried every single diesel fuel additive that I could find. Used each for 3 full tanks to decide which one works best and is most cost effective.

I decided on Diesel Kleen, its cheaper by far than most others and one bottle can make roughly three tanks. The truck runs quieter, has less smoke, runs better, literally pays for itself in mileage increase, etc... .....

Its been my favorite so far, but as Texas Diesel said, lubricity is the main concern. Your best bet is two stroke oil. I'm partial to Castor 927, bean oil smells good when it burns.
