What's the speed limit

Thanks, TDR Staff

School was not like this when I was going.

America has another ..........

75 in Nevada on the Interstates out of town, mostly 65 in town (LV). State highways vary, but mostly 65 - 75. Even when the National limit was 55, up to 65 was just 'Wasting of a natural resource', hence, not a moving violation.

DarrellB - Billy Carter tried making it the same in all states. The problem was. . 55 was too slow and the whole world slowed to a Georgian crawl.

I never knew

That the speed limit differed so much from State to State. I myself like to take my time driving unless I'm on the interstate then it's hammer down. ;) Of course with my 4:10's 90mph is about it. :)

speeds

In Oregon of course its 65 on rural interstates, 55 mph on other Hwy's and in some sections of the Interstates. However - like Bob said - you will probably be passed if you are doing 70 - I am totally amazed at some fo the speeds. Unless of course your behind some Q-tip in a motor home - then its 40 !

:D

Doc, your fictionalizing history again. That was Jimmy Carter. Billy was busy brewing beer:p

They are talking about raising the speed limit in Oregon because nobody obeys it anyway. Some people figure that you need to be 15 to 20 mph above the posted speed limit so with this logic we will all soon be able to drive at WOT:eek: :D Then instead of Police patroling the highways it will be EMT's:D :D

Happy trails

Bob:)

55 was supposed to be a temporary fix

The lawmakers wanted to cut fuel consumption back in the early-mid 70s (if I remember correctly) so they talked about wanting to go from 60 down to 50. Everybody said 50 was too slow, economists said it would decrease national productivity too much; transportation sector said that 50 would force heavy haulers to use MORE fuel because they would have to run lower gears and higher rpms.

In came the COMPROMISE - let's make it 55 until the oil crisis passes. Now, close to 30 years later this temporary fix is finally laid to rest. Now we have proof that increased speed does not mean more deaths, just like ABS hasn't caused a decrease in rearend collisions.

I say throw the cell phone out the window and drive like you are aware of your surroundings. If I feel safe at 100 in my Jaguar then let me run that. If I am hauling and think that 60 is as fast as I need to go then I will stay out of the fast-movers way.

BTW - Speed limit on rural Interstate in NC is 70 but they will ticket you for 5 over. I-40 through RTP is 65 but everybody runs 70-75 or crawls, depending on time of day. Most controlled access 4-lane is 65 out in the country but you can run 10 over without geting pulled (but you may get run over from behind).

Must be nice.

Here in Houston and some of hte surrounding counties 55 mph is the rule. When I head east to Lake Charles, there's a stretch of road, 3 lanes, for almost 15 miles that the speed limit is posted at 55 mph.

All because someone thinks the speed limit will have a positive impact on the air quality.

The gassers have to go through a safety inpection, and a rolling emissions test. They put the car on a small dyno and perfrom the emissions test at different loads. You'll spend almost $50 for that little sticker in the corner of the windshield. Right below the other $50 a year sticker for your registration.

I have to disagree with you - sort of. I just spent 2 weeks in Germany and drove quiet a bit on the autobahn. It scared the crap out of me to be blunt. The DIFFERNCE in speed between the 'fast' lane and the 'normal' lane makes for deadly accidents. I don't have a problem cruising along I-5 at 80mph - it feels comfortable in my vehicles - but if I come up on a slower vehicle and need to go around them I'm not in fear of pulling out in front of some SL500 Mercedes doing 120mph that was not in my mirrors a . 25 seconds ago. I couldn't believe the number of close calls I saw because of this on the autobahn. Sam Peterson(?) should open a brake shop in Germany if he wants to get rich. Most germans will tell you that they don't send ambulances to car wrecks on the autobahn - they send the coroner. Both my wife (learned to drive in Germany) & I noted how much less stressful driving is in the US when we got back home - we were at SFO on 101/280/19th street in San Francisco to put it in perspective for those that know the area.

I also ride sport bikes dirt bikes so by no means am I a fuddy duddy q-tip driver:D

LMAO - QRTRHRS

Yeah - Weren't they twins or something :D

Maybe it was Billy and not Jimmy who cause the lower speed limits. If Billy drove drunk, he wouldn't be as dangerous and Jimmy was just looking out for him :)

just come back from Bend, Oregon. They have perfect roads, but the speed is posted at 55MPH. My cousin says they only ticket drivers with Calif. plates, it was officially reported on the tv news.

I can crawl faster than 55, and I hated it.

My understanding is that when the feds lifted the 55 mph law Oregon refused until the feds said they wouldn't be getting anymore Hwy funds. When OR finally gave in they said they would raise the limit but enforce it right to the mph.

I dont perticularly think speeding kills. Here in NJ people do not go to the right after passing another car. When I got my license, it clearly stated in the manual that you "Keep right except to pass".

If this law was enforced (if it even still exists?) we wouldnt have as many highway accidents.

People here get in the left lane (even going 10 mph under the limit) and act like they freakin bought it.
