By your own argument a 200hp ecm program is possible. The VA does 130hp from just duration. Stick in some pressure (at least 65hp from a box like an EZ) and throw in some timing for more torque and you've got 200hp.

I don't think we can jump to that. 65 HP is, from my measurements, close to the upper limit for additional power obtained via actual increases in rail pressure from external pressure fooling. Whether or not all of that can be obtained via software I don't know. Best case assume it can. However, the VA C3. 2 is not a 130 HP box -- it made only 50 rear wheel horsepower on my truck, even though I'm not convinced that represents the box accurately (clutch slippage) or the limits of the the 90v supply for that matter.

Bullydog says about 30 HP of the 'pup comes from pressure, which puts rail pressure at about 25,500 PSI and the amount of power increase due to duration and timing at 100HP. There'e probably some fudge factor in there.

So best case I think there might be 160 HP or so via software. I don't think 200 HP is possible, even with pressure, and I think the reason the 'pup doesn't make 160 HP now is so Bullydog can sell more pressure boxes to stack with it.

I am thinking about trying one of these loader programs, and adding it to my stack of Tst powermax and my edge ez. I talked to Greg from TST, and he said he didn't know if it would work. Said they have not tested any. Greg also stated that with just his box (tstpowermax) alone on 9/9 would consume all the fuel fed to it by the rail and injector pump. They just couldn't supplt any more. So his question to me was why I would want to stack any other boxes with his? I believe I have seen posted numbers with a benefit of having the boxes stacked??? He stated that adding injectors, pressure would only help low to mid range power. Any one know if this makes any sense? Ideas, comments, criticism? Enough is never enough! Thanks guys! Lee.

I also read somewhere that the downloaders remove the speed limiter on the ford's or chevy's, any clue if it does on the Dodges?

I can't believe the number of times some of us have given this warning. All I can say is that stacking a downloader with a timing box is something that needs very careful study before you put your $40,000 truck to the smoke test. remember that each mfg has the goal of exploring the limits available via the methods they chose -- downloader, external box, whatever. If a downloader is able to approach the maximum amount of timing advance that is safe, what happens when you stack another timing box on top of that?

I dont' think the TST needs any help, and I think stacking it with a downloader of any kind, while fun and exciting, is not the way towards efficient power enhancements. if TST thought that more timing or more duration was either possible or beneficial they would probably have done it. the only improvement over the current TST is to add a simple pressure box. 40 horsepower or so due to pressure fooling instead of duration. the net gains in terms of actual power increase varies from 20-30 horsepower from what I am hearing. But adding any timing to the TST? I dont' think so.

He stated that adding injectors, pressure would only help low to mid range power. Any one know if this makes any sense?
True - to a point. The real benefit of stacking a pressure box with the TST is that it allows you to get the same overall amount of fuel, but get it delivered a bit earlier in the combustion cycle. By upping the pressure, and lowering the duration, you get the same (or a little more) power produced, with lower EGT's.

Now, if you had a truck set up so that it could run a TST on 9/9, then adding a pressure box would do little to nothing for your peak HP. However, for street driving, and even 1/4-mile racing to a lesser extent, it's not so much the peak HP, but "area under the curve" - ie. how quickly in the RPM band that HP is made, and maintained. The use of a pressure box will help push that low-to-mid-range curve up.

And, with the addition of properly-designed injectors to optimize fuel delivery, spray patterns, etc. - more power cna be obtained. The guys over at F1 Diesel are toying with 700HP with a combination of a TST, a pressure box, and their injectors.

'05 looks to have the makings of an impressive year :)

It's a success!!!!

Guys,. . we've talked about everything and every box except what the question was in the original post,... Quadzilla DL. What does anyone know about this DL?????

Doug,

I understand you dont think a downloader style box will be capable of 200hp. Do you think they are a good approach if I am only looking for 100hp. I like the easy install and its application of a litte pressure/timing/duration combined. Any negatives you see with these downloaders from a reliability standpoint.

Thanks,

Carl

I did a post in products and accessories but here is some more info. The throttle mapping is nice and smooth compared to a edge ez. On the extreme setting it has more initial snap off the line than my T. S. T. It makes less egt than the T. S. T. for the same power or at least seat of your pants power. The boost is low untill it hits O. D. than up to 45 or so. I only did a few tests after I installed it so I will go out today and do some more ,but I don't think anything is going to be 100% accurate untill I get my new transmission in. My t. s. t. boost elbow or whatever it is for the 05 is not here yet so I am staying away from the higher tst settings.

sure they are a viable option. it doesn't really matter if you increase duration, advance timing, or raise rail pressure with box or with a downloader. All the same cautions apply. Its true that they are the first to combine all three which I have to say is a good idea, especially at those power levels. The only things I can find of concern with the downloaders are maximum pressure and the fact that they leave a VIN timestamp that could be traced in a warranty dispute. and if you intend to go beyond, say 160 horsepower or so. I'd really like to see a downloader push that limit. while i don't think it can be done, I'd like to see some real study done to find out just where the software or digital limit is.

the only reliability issue I can see is a tradeoff between:

1. with a downloader you have zero part count increase after you do the download. that should be more reliable.

2. after the download, your gold standard backup stock program is stored in a device that gets stored, well, where? If anything happens to the downloader after you download, then you might be in trouble if you want to go back to stock. If you consider the importance of the stock program, and where your support and gold software standard is now (dealer), you might want to develop an archive / backup strategy to reduce your risk.

Thanks Doug,

I am waiting to see what comes out new early this year. If nothing impresses

me I will probally purchase a downloader type box. I really like the ease of

installation. The box will stay in the truck to help prevent it getting lost.
