Any ideas why it's such a PITA to change the dang thing? Could it be in any worse of a place? I've never had such a fight with a filter before. Got any ideas on a remote filter mount kit for the 3rd. gens?

I think the location is quite convenient. I always change it from below, and have accomplished this feat with both a strap wrench and a cup-type wrench. The cup wrench was easier.

I too like the location but change mine from the top. Two band clamps and one connector and the air feed is removed and it is a piece of cake.

Maybe I'm changing the wrong filter. The one I'm referring to is located behind the alt. , behind the AC comp. , up along side the block near the head. The only way I can figure out how to get it off is by cussing, throwing things and having to take a beer's break. I guess I'm just used to changing the oil in my ol' PSD where the filter dang near hung there by itself. The only problem with the cup style wrench is that the filters I use do not have the flutes for the wrench.

phloop I change mine from the top and find easy to do if you pull the intake air tube from the turbo and air box lid.

I've been doing it this way since the truck was new.

I'm still used to the way I did the lof on my 99.

So you tried it from below with a cup wrench and still had to cuss and take a beer break? hehe... I've already ordered one of those sweet filter sockets even tho I don't have my truck yet... should be a piece of cake! :D

Underneath, walk in the park. Have the correct cup wrench on hand (not plastic), use fluted filters, and drink the beer instead of taking apart the air intake pipe. ;)

Briman I should have also pointed out that part of the reason I pull the intake hose is to examine it for dust.

Yeah I know I'm paranoid.

That's the oil filter, all right:--) . See the classifieds and get one of Jeff Hardwick's wrenches. It will make the job easier and it's purdy to look at:cool: ;) . After you do it once, it will be easier the next time.

Rank Ram, I clean and oil my air filter every oil change (5k) so I do what you do. I look inside the intake tube for oil (means too much on the filter) and other such stuff. I just skip a step and don't take off the tube entirely. This ought to qualify me for the DC big brother warranty watch:eek:. Besides, the easiest way to change the oil filter is in my natural position (horizontal). :)

I think it's a good idea to look inside the intake pipe to see what is going on.

Did you survive the fires????

That wrench would be nice but it doesn't work with the filters that do not have the flutes, and it's too nice to pound it onto the filter. :eek: And you would think that it would be easier changing it after doing it once, but no it isn't. :mad: I will admit that I'm not as torn up as I was the first time I changed the dang thing. :{

So use the fleetguard... there's nothing better out there anyways! And isn't it worth it for the easy installation? :)

Using the Fleetguard would be a good idea if I was able to get it locally, which translates into being able to get it quickly and easily. Easy installation I have, the removal is the PITA part of the deal.

Just order you a case of filters from Genos and you will always have one. Stock up on them filters, fuel filters. My wife is always on my :--) that I keep to many parts around :-{} but I live in the country so I stock up. :D

Yes we did, I must say it was as close as I want to be to such a mess.

The sad part was the fire was caused by some teens that had an illegal campfire.

I use the Fleetguard. No local source down here in the Keys. I either order 'em or pick up 3 or 4 when I'm up north visiting the kids. Please DO NOT tell us you are using Frams!!!

I take mine off with a KD brand strap wrench. No problem, not even when it was new.

No on the frams. I use Hastings brand filters. And I really don't have a problem getting the filter off, I just have a problem getting to the filter. I don't have enough elbows in my arms to bend 'em around all the other stuff thats in the way.
