Hey fellas! How's the weather in the rest of the world? I didn't check the thermometer today, but it felt like we were somewhere around the 80 degree mark-can't beat that with a stick! #ad
That's a bit above normal for this time of year. Don't feel bad though; if it's this warm in Feb. , what does that tell ya about our summertime temps. ? #ad

I talked to a guy a few days ago that owns a '92 Cummins, auto. transmission, with about 300k miles. Last time we spoke I was driving a Powerstoke. Everything he said about his Cummins was good. He asked what year mine was, I told him, and he obviously knew it was a 24V. He didn't have anything good to say about that. He's not a "mine is better than yours" kind of person, but his opinion of the 24V was obvious. He then said I would have done better with an auto. transmission-lots of problems with Dodge manual transmission. Keep in mind that this fella tows lots of heavy equipment. It was suprising that he praised the auto. so much. I'm the type of person to stand my ground as long as I have some knowledge (personal experience) to back me up. No ground to stand on in this case. I was left speechless. I'd appreciate some TDR member opinions. Is there a drawback with the 24V? Why did they change? Give it to me straight-don't need anyone to blow sunshine up my a$$. #ad
Thanks in advance.

Relax. You have a fine truck. True, I prefer the 12 valve, but the 24 valve engine has proven itself to be good, with a few gliches (like the injection pump), but everything has gliches. Same for the 5 speed (mostly 5th gear nut/mainshaft--se threads on it), and it is still my preference among the trannies.

Bull,

I've got a 99 4x4 5speed 67,000mi. Only problem I've had is with brake pull, been back to the dealer 3 times still pulls. From what I've read in the TDR some of the earlier 5 speeds had problems with the 5th gear retaining nut comming loose if the truck was run in 5th pulling a heavy load with RPM's 1700 or below. That problem is susposed to be fixed 99 and up. Most of my driving is I-40 70mph MPG ranges from 18-20.

Joe. . are you feeling ok ?? #ad

praise the 24V... LOL

Bull don't give it a second thought he is just jealous. . and alot of the 12v guys have never had any dealings with the mighty 24v so they are skeptical and wish they could make so much power with so little work hehehehe

Bull, not to worry. First, the 24 valve is the same engine as the 12 valve, it has in adition to the extra valves, about 50 more horsepower than the 92, it has a different fuel injection pump and is computer controlled, the 24 valve truck has some modifications to the chassis that make it a much sturdier platform than the 1st generation trucks, weighs more than a thousand pounds more than the 1st generation trucks. Yes it still takes fuel to make horsepower and move pounds down the road, thus we burn a little more fuel,I think I will keep mine. bg

Bull:

The "official" reason from Cummins for the switch was to meet tighter emissions requirements. They claimed the 24V would be more powerful and more economical than the B5. 9, but so far nobody has found that to be true.

I have a new 2001. 5 also, and honestly, I miss the 12V in my 96. I just don't miss the automatic.

The transmission problem that guy spoke of was the 5-speed's tendency to lose the 5th gear nut. Yours will likely do it one day; they all seem to. His old 3-speed auto (I think the 92's were 3-speeds) is a great transmission... but the newer 4-speeds are crap. I know -- I had one. And I fried it. That's why I traded up to a 6-speed.

In my 96, I got a consistent 17 mpg unloaded and driving like a madman. With 4800 miles on my new truck, I have yet to get over 14 mpg. I'm hoping that by 10k, it'll improve, but so far I'm not impressed.

As for power, granted, my 96 was nicely modified, so I can't really compare well, but it was definitely stronger than this alleged "High Output" 24V I have. Once I get some injectors in it, it should have the same amount of power my 12V did, so then I can see for sure.

Meanwhile, enjoy your truck. It's better than a Ford, and it still has the most kick-*** diesel ever made. #ad

My friends 12 valve (95) auto pulls 24,000lbs no problems so far, Only 60,000 miles towing. You can't go wrong in my book with the 24 or the 12 valve motors.

As far as I know all years of Rams 1994-up are affected by the fifth gear issue. More details are in TDR Issues 29, 30, and 31 in my Technical Topics articles.

Hey Bull,

Quit braggin about your sunshine. It was 50 here Friday and 19 on Saturday. I was gonna change my oil, but I'm gonna give it a couple days to thaw out first.

bull , i think your 1st gen friend is referring to the 5 spds in the first gen , i think they were the getrag's the auto equipped rams were better than the 5 spds of that era , and the autos of this era are better than the auto in robs 96 , even with his upgrades , he didn't have DTT around when he did his #ad
